I heard from a friend that students at a summer camp at Yale brought a rice cooker and...exploded a part of the school (?). I'm not sure how accurate this statement is, but are we allowed to bring rice cookers to our dorms?

LOL at this question. Just to be sure, I would email Yale. But it is an awkward question so…bring it to school with you and throw it away if anyone asks haha

^Rice cooker policy IS a pressing issue that most youngsters fail to consider properly. Such a decision should not be made lightly.

From what I hear, microwaves, etc. are “not allowed,” but room inspections are always announced with plenty of warning, and they cannot move or touch anything. Throw a sheet over it.

From what I remember of the dorm regulations, cooking devices (rice cookers included) are generally prohibited in the dorm rooms. The exception to the rule, however, is Swing Space, where the suites’ kitchenettes allow for more appliances. That said, you won’t be Swing Space your freshman year, but may be annexed there if you are a junior in Berkeley, Trumbull, Stiles, and Morse.

ok, one, guys, no harassment over the rice cooker issue, I kicked myself(hard) for not bringing one after a couple days at Yale(the food is good, but sadly, rice withdrawal is very very real).

The actual policy, no. Not allowed.

In practice, stash it under your bed or in your closet during inspections.

I have the exact same concern! I’m fairly adventurous about my food, but I must have at least one serving of Chinese rice per week. And I second ECazndb8r–rice withdrawal is real. Last summer, I was at camp for about a month, and one of my Korean friends literally grew sick from a lack of Asian cuisine. (Or so we’ve speculated, based off the fact that she immediately felt better after having a bowl of rice…haha)

Non Asians can’t appreciate rice withdrawal! 2 stories for you:

I was there for about 2 weeks. I remember chatting about missing rice w/a Korean American girl from my homestate. We needed to get off campus and find some Asian food. We hiked about 2 blks away for some Hunan chinese food. The two of us gobbled down that rice like there was no tomorrow. I’m sure we were quite the sight for the staff that night!

I’m sure my friend Jean would remember this event as well!

Story 2: I get a call from another Chinese on Old Campus (Thanks for thinking of me Alice!) . She said her parents had sent her a small rice cooker and rice and to stop by later that night. I get there about 10PM and she’s got some small 6 cup cooker – and the room is practically standing room only w/Asian folks. Looked like a scene out of “Survivor”! We each had a small bowl and just some soy sauce for flavor! It makes me LOL as I think about that sad yet satisfying scene!!!

Over dinner the other night, I told my story about the room full of asians gobbling down a paltry bowl of soy sauce & rice late at night on Old Campus. They both immediately laid claim to the two rice cookers we currently own! My 14 year old said that she “gets the big one” and if I could also send her off with a 50# bag. My younger one (the 9 year old) said that the red rice cooker willl do just fine for her.

I guess they figure that dad can just go get another one or go native and cook using a simple pot…

Rice Withdrawl: underestimate it to your own peril!
