Are we allowed to

take more than five courses a term? there are so many interesting courses i would like to take. does anyone know how this works?

You'd have to pay extra to take a sixth course and get special permission.

You're also almost definitely not going to be able to handle the course work.

i mean, if you take credit/nc i don't think it's impossible. why should you have to pay more for more courses? this isn't the protocol at most schools; brown doesn't charge people (as far as i know) for taking fewer courses. do you know anyone that has taken six courses? i have heard from people that students have done it.

If you take six courses you pay extra because they're offering you 3-5 courses per semester for their fee a as a full time student. If you only take 2 courses you are charged half tuition. Taking six courses require more money.

I also think you're not there taking the classes so I wouldn't be so presumptuous as to what is possible.

thanks for your responses. at the same time, i think the school should be more flexible for those who would like the option - especially since taking six courses is not uncommon at other schools (yes, even top ivies) for students who are looking for a true challenge.

Taking four courses as the normal load is also not common at other schools, yes, even top Ivies.

All of our courses are designed as 4 credit style courses (though we don't have a credit system) and labs never count for additional credits (except for CH116 which is a separate lab course and Operating Systems which has a separate half course lab).

There are not many schools, if any, that will alow you to take a 24 credit-hour load (assuming 0 labs) without additional costs, adn there are few students who ever take that on at a challenging University.

People do it, people do get special permission, on the order of one or two a semester, but I wouldn't assume before you get here that 6 courses is something you can handle.

I will take 6 next semester. I took 5 for fall

my siblings at yale and princeton are taking six courses (At princeton, same system as brown with six courses = 24 credits) with no additional charge. so it is possible, for those who are interested in knowing. just wanted to get more information about the systematic procedures. and, by the way, i am a student at brown, and have not had trouble taking five courses every term for the past four semesters. so i do have a idea of what i would like to accomplish and what I have accomplished at brown. it makes sense for my situation.

who should i see for special permission?

Use your adviser and the Brown webpage. If you're already here, you should be able to figure out the resources on your own. It bugs me when Brown students who are supposed to be independent and enterprising can't even read the Dean of the College webpage or Registrars webpage (the places I'd start) and figure out who they have to talk to themselves.

Just ask on the Jolt, not a pre-college web page, or do your leg work yourself.

As they say on 4chan:

Anon is not your personal army.

If it's about expanding your knowledge, I'd assume you could audit extra courses without any trouble...

You can't audit a 6th... anything that'd show up on your transcript, from my understanding, is limited to 5. You can vagabond however many you like though.

wth, modest? rules 1 and 2, bro. ESPECIALLY here.

damn.

I know. I wasn't thinking. I was ****y and figured no one would get the message if I just said "Anon is not your personal army," though people on here frequently think that's the case.
