I don’t think that it’s guaranteed per se because of legal issues. Especially if they applied for housing by the priority date of March 1, they should and will get honors housing. Even if they applied for housing after that date, they should get honors housing. In past years, honors has not been full until they moved some non-honors people in and blocked out some spaces. To be sure, just call housing. They’re very helpful.

i thought someone posted the other day that he(she) was told it was pretty much guaranteed.

idk who or what thread, though.

It may have been me or m2ck who said it, but that’s how the situation usually works. An honors freshman will get an honors room if they want one.

I don’t think I said that honors housing is guaranteed. I think I may have said that there isn’t usually a problem getting honors housing if a freshman wants it. Last year they had extra housing.

Someone may have posted that freshmen are guaranteed housing. Did someone post that?

Found my quote…

Honors dorms are not guaranteed to honors students. However, in recent years, all honors kids who’ve wanted them have gotten them…

no, it wasn’t here. i found it on the univ alabama class of 2014 FB page.

some kid called and talked to housing and they told him that honors housing was guaranteed.

maybe it isn’t officially, but that is what he was told.

He may have been told that housing is guaranteed for freshmen.

here’s a quote:

I too missed the honors deadline, but when I was visiting Bama a week ago they said that since I am in the honors program I am guaranteed a room in the honors dorms. So I’d figure the same would apply to you.

Thank you for finding the quote. I would rest assured that an honors freshman would get honors housing if they wanted it and that quote is evidence for it. Roll Tide!

Also saw a post by a young man who called housing and they moved his pick day from April 29 to April 20. Others might want to try that as well.

The reach schools are sending out their decisions now, and there will no doubt be many who will withdraw their room picks to go to their “dream” schools.

You might get lucky and get a spot in one of those coveted Ridgecrest rooms. At the very least, you can probably put yourself in an honors room and then do room swap or just move yourself to another space when one becomes available.

Good luck!

Also, if you do not live in the dorm that you really want during your freshman year, you will have a better pick as a sophomore, especially if you have some AP/dual enrollment credit. Sea_tide, did you get to select your suite/room the first day of housing picks in February, as you had lots of credits? My son got to select the second day. As the years roll on, your choices grow.

ok - so, seatide - where is it that you live?

my DD wants ridgecrest, but it sounded like the ones with both laundry and kitchen (?) on the floor would be awesome.

why is ridgecrest so much more desirable?

can you tell about all of the honors choices? or point me in the direction where you have done this before?

to me, ANY of the honors dorms would be awesome.

what are the pros and cons of the different choices?

Ridgecrest was full as of last week when I logged on. There was still availability in Riverside and Lakeside at that time.

Re: Ridgecrest (and the other dorms)…

I could be wrong, but I don’t think any of the floors have both laundry and kitchens. I think they alternate. But, I could be mistaken.

Ridgecrest South is more “desirable” because it’s newer and a bit closer to the main part of campus. However, since the other honors dorms are newish, there’s no negatives to them.

Lakeside is close to Lakeside Dining (which also has a Store, & Lakeside Lattes), so that can be a plus. Also, being close to the lake is nice, too.

Riverside has the pool and the clubhouse (although other dorms have game rooms, too). It is closer to the engineering and science buildings. Riverside West is also close to Lakeside Dining. Riverside East is closer to science buildings. Riverside North is the furthest away.

[Housing & Residential Communities - The University of Alabama](http://housing.ua.edu/hallslist.cfm)

If you go to each res halls webpage and look at the pics and videos, you can determine which is best for you. There all good.

The only thing my son said about Ridgecrest South (he has friends living there) is that the rooms are funky sizes. For example, some of the bedrooms are 10 by 10, but others in the same suite are slightly smaller.

Yes, some rooms differ a bit in size in other halls as well. The back room in Riverside and Lakeside is a bit bigger. I think the second room (room B or room 2) in those dorms is a bit smaller.

Can you refresh my memory about when they can look to change rooms again? I thought after the March 25th date, they couldn’t look to change rooms until April. But I might be making that up ;)

I’m in Ridgecrest West and know that floors 2 and 3 have both a kitchen and a laundry room because I sometimes go in and watch TV in the kitchen/TV room while I’m doing laundry. I like it because it’s newish, (next year will be its 4th year having students, IIRC) is close to the lake, Lakeside Dining, and is a short walk to the business school. We also have a sand volleyball court.

The rooms may officially be the same size, but they are differently-shaped depending on which one (A, B, C, or D) you choose. D does seem a bit bigger, but I like C because it is the corner room. Really, the honors residence halls (with the exception of South) are the same apart from some amenities, location, and “dorm culture,” though the latter is more apparent between honors and non-honors residence halls, think Lakeside West compared to Tutweiler.

RobD, that is correct from my experience. After the first year, recontacting is done based on class standing by credits. Note that people who decide to live in the same space for the next year get first dibs, then those who are staying in the same residence hall, and then those switching halls, which is where credits come into play. If you miss the deadline for keeping your space or staying in the same hall, you can still do so provided that space is available.

That’s one of the few halls that I’ve only been briefly in. I didn’t know that it had the kitchen and laundry on the same floor. Usually they alternate and are on top of one another in location. That’s a good idea to have them near each other for the reasons SEA_Tide mentioned.
