Are weird personal statement topics acceptable?

I've been looking at sample personal statements on Google and I'll admit, some of them are pretty awesome but these sample essays are always about how the person moved to the US from a third world country, battled cancer or had a relative that battled cancer, competed in a sport that was traditionally meant for one sex only, etc. Problem is I'm from a middle-class, healthy family and I can't think of a single instance or event in my life that can be considered "attention grabbing". I did however find a weird essay on Google--the writer got into Berkeley by writing about how much HE LOVED ICE CREAM. Let me repeat--ICE CREAM. I was basically in shock and thought that it was complete BS but later I found another personal statement about a boy's experience from breaking up with his girlfriend, and he got into a UC school.
So basically, do any of you guys attend a prestigious school or just a school that you really love by writing personal statements on random topics? If so, what was the topic? :O

No expert, but be yourself. IMO, that is what they want to hear.

Don’t be weird for the sake of being weird, but it’s okay to write about an uncommon topic. I mean, who really wants to read another sports essay?

Yes weird topics are acceptable.

However: you are well advised to choose whatever topic allows for the most personal, detailed, and revealing essay. The personal, detailed, revealing essay on a common topic will be far more useful than the cliched essay on a weird topic.

But if the weird topic allows for your most personal, detailed, and revealing essay: have at it!
