Are XL sheets really needed for UVM mattresses?

Hi Folks, the sales lady convinced me that the regular twin deep fitted sheets would fit all XL mattresses even with the pad etc. Has anyone tried regular twin fitted sheets? Do they fit? Thanks for any first hand info!
