Are you a workaholic work horse?

Are you constantly working/studying that you have no room for free time ?

I'm curious to what other CC'ers view themselves.

State your major, and what takes up most of your time (ie work, studying, EC's,etc.)

Mech. Engr
*Work (~8hrs a wk on 3 days, but i feel like the boss is working me to death...)
*homework--engr HW takes FOREVER to get a problem correct; and if its not that, i'll be studying so I can catch up (...I don't think you can ever get ahead in as an engineer)

*wasted time--when I'm stressed, I don't spend my time as efficiently as i can be.

ARGH!

Wow Brando…I’ve got mad respect. Mechanical Engineering? **** no!

Journalism/Chinese Double Major (possible Spanish minor)
Work: I work 10 hours a week as a student volunteer for my dining services. No breaks, and I’m worked like a dog. :stuck_out_tongue:
Homework: Not that much…
Extracurriculars: Newspaper Columnist and Writer

I honestly think work takes up most of my time (consecutively). I’m only taking 15 credit hours (all GECs) so it’s not that bad.

I waste lots of time. Like right now…

Political science major. I am almost always either in class or reading. I spend 4 hours a night sleeping, 15 hours a week interning, 2 hours a week volunteering, and approximately 2 hours a week presiding over a student organization. I study the rest of the time. That is literally every moment of my life occupied.

I have to fit LSAT prep in there somewhere FAST, damn it.

I’m also in mechanical engineering, and I agree it does take a good amount of work and devotion.

But the end, it’ll be worth it b

majors: chemistry and neural science
job: 16-18 hrs/week but soon it will be 10-12!
work: im in class like 22-25 hrs/week because of labs. biological sciences involve a ton of reading and the physical sciences involve long problem sets so with 1 of each major it’s annoying, esp since i have to keep my gpa up for my scholarship :/

but I still have enough free time to chill and go out if i don’t leave everything til the last minute. I reccommend cal newport’s blog study hacks for tips on how to manage time efficiently as opposed to wasting time leading to stress

@twisted: 4 hours/night is not good for you. I know people taking 18 credits in difficult majors with jobs and they usually manage a decent amount of sleep so you can definitely do it. I know polsci is tons of reading plus with the LSAT it’s hectic but you’re sleeping half as much as the ideal…

I know, my major is just so easy I don’t know why I bothered to go to college.

Alix–I have read up on Cal Newports Study Hacks. He wrote some articles pertaining to Deliberate Practice and how to apply to academics. I’m just trying to figure out how to study more effectively w/o using extra time. Cal, is definitely a genius, in regards to inovative studying techniques. I remember back in elementary I used to be ahead of the curve, but now I’m just trying to stay afloat! Are you class of 2012 ?

Plattsburgh–I definitely hope we both reap the rewards of an awfully challenging major!

Twisted–I sleep so much now, 8-10 hrs depending on the day! If i’m not studying then I’m usually taking a nap. IDK, but yesturday and today I’ve took 3-4 hrs hap in addition to a full 8 hrs of sleep…I think that too much sleep is worse than not enough sleep!

Aerospace Engineering, junior as well. Taking 15 hours worth of nothing but junior level aerospace courses, plus contributing to my research team an additional 10-15 hrs/week. Spent 6 hours today working in a group on a homework assignment, and did not fully complete it. That’s a typical Saturday for me, yay. I get about 6 hours of sleep a night, so that’s pretty awesome compared to my peers.

twisted - whoa, i said it’s a “ton of reading”, not easy - are you just looking to be miffed or something? anyway all I said is is 4 hrs/night regularly is ridiculous. obviously you know that already and if you’re fine with it it’s your business, but most people couldn’t function like that…

@brando: yeah i’ve read a couple of his articles and they helped me because I used to be hopeless with managing time. I used to do what he calls “pseudo-studying” where you head to the library with the vague notion of “studying” and waste hours staring at a book. with mechE i guess it’s natural to always be playing catch-up.
yep, I’ll be graduating in either Jan or May 2012 :)

gstein: i guess that’s what you get for being a rocket scientist? haha :P

4 hours a day? holy **** how do you survive. i need 7 to function.

Brando: Right on, team MechEngineers!

And wow, at whoever sleeps only four hours a day. I love to sleep. Seriously. I would lose my mind.
