Hi, I was wondering, if the reason is good enough, if someone can appeal for an additional 1-2 years of financial aid if they have went over the 6-year limit. I went to a community college for 5 years because I started at remedial level mathematics and english courses. I had to work my way up to the highest level math, physics and chemistry courses, which had a lot of prerequisites. This took a total of 5 years, and I am now transferring and expected to graduate from the school I will transfer to in two years. Which means I will only have 1 year of financial aid, when my degree demands at least two years, as there are so many requirements to complete.
If it is the PELL, then no. 600 % (or 6 years ful time PELL) is the max - no appeals. It is a federally mandated time limit, nothing the school can do
The PELL is the only federal aid that I know of that has a specific 6 years limit. Federal loans have an aggregate limit that are a $ figure rather than a time period (though getting full direct loans every year would use them up quicker than 6 years).
Most programs have a limit on the number of credits you can have attempted and still be eligible for aid. They can increase the limit on appeal if there is a good reason. What aid would be available is a different question as Once you max out on PELL and federal loans, there is nothing the Scholl can do about that.
Have you used any federal loans yet? If you haven’t, you might still be eligible to borrow to cover your last two years. It’s not ideal but it could work. How much extra money do you need?

You got six years of Pell Grant, which should have given you adequate time to deal with your remedial courses…and get your bachelors degree.
<<<
Exactly. Think about it…how many “remedial credits” did you need? Typically a student who needs to take sub100 classes is just taking 1-2 English classes and maybe 1-2 math classes.

Yes, I did get my FA package and I only have to pay $250 dollars for the entire year. I am hella poor, so this really helps me out. I also applied for the NTSAF scholarship which could really help me out, but we will not get decisions on those until August!
<<<<
So, you’ve rec’d your FA pkg from USC. Does this mean that your pkg included a Pell Grant, but now you’ve found out that you won’t get the Pell Grant or what???
BTW…are you premed?

No, I had to take nine semesters of math to get to where I was.
Here was my sequence:
Math 12, Math 23, Math 40, Math 80, Math 170, Math 180, Math 190, Math 191, Math 220, Math 270.
It wasn’t until Math 180 until I got to college level math! You guys are the only people who have scowled me for being apart of the 1% in my school who makes it from the level of math I placed in to even get to the college level math.
And I was also planning to apply to UC’s this upcoming fall, which require you to complete all the high level math classes, no matter which path you take to get there. Unfortunately I had to start from the very bottom and work my ass off to get there to even be considered for admission!
Yes, I got a Financial Aid package from the school, and it’s very nice. I can continue to receive financial aid from USC until after the fall 2016-2017 school year, which is exactly two years of financial aid upon matriculation. I can finish in two years, but I was only wondering if I could extend this by any chance, just to be safe. Finishing in two years will not be a problem, but who knows, things happen!
While you had to take the math in sequence, you didn’t have to take a full course loan and take the financial aid for every semester. You could have taken just one math class in the summer and paid out of pocket for that class.
My daughter will have to do a similar series, but will take the remedial classes in the summer too, and it will be better to pay in full for those than to use an entire semester of ‘Pell time’ I do think FA offices should do a better job of helping students capitalize on the best use of the funds.
It’s complicated. Glad you can finish within the limited time.
@twoinanddone I live in California so the BOG Fee Waiver covers my class fees. But yes, you are right I should have been more careful about what I was doing with my financial aid situation, but I thought I would have had three years rather than 2, until the financial aid office at my school gave me the bad news.
But please do not scold and assume that remedial courses are one or two classes worth, because that is definitely not the case if you have to take STEM-leveled classes–I was really offended by this, as I had to work really hard to stay persistent and not break my sequence.
@mom2collegekids
My GPA is none of your business. What does my GPA HAVE TO DO WITH THE QUESTION I JUST ASKED? Besides that was my transfer GPA, not my overall GPA. You are SO NOT a mom for us college kids as your username states–you do nothing but ridicule others and don’t even know their full situations. You’re awful and I no longer want to hear your opinion on my financial aid situation.
GPA has a lot to do with getting into med school. Helping with the financial questions to finishing UG and then what? You are asking for people’s time to give you input and guidance after all.
Of course it does, but it has nothing to do with this PARTICULAR TOPIC AT HAND. I did not see the point in this “mom” to bring up my GPA, at all. It’s so irrelevant. I asked for help regarding financial aid, not my GPA. My GPA is well above a 2.0 and I’ve never dropped a course, so my GPA, again has nothing to do with my financial aid situation.
I didn’t ask anyone on here about my chances of getting into medical school, if that were the case, I would have went to the other portion of this forum and took care of that myself.
mom2collegekids has at least one son in med school so she understands how they work, she knows quite a lot about college admissions in general, and I believe she is originally from CA so she knows about it too. She’s really not trying to be mean; she’s genuinely trying to help you.
Yes, that is fine and dandy but that repetitive information, that every premed should know, is irrelevant to me at this point in time, which is what pissed me off. Like I said, if I needed help with that, I would have asked. This woman went out her way to another thread I posted information in to point out my GPA. Although the information I post is public, her actions were unnecessary. If she wants to be respected on here by me, she should focus on answering the questions that are asked.
Scenario: If you went to a financial aid counselor asking about LEU percentage and they happen to scroll across your GPA and point out that your GPA is too low to get into medical school, wouldn’t that be unnecessary and irrelevant to what you are there for?
This is a public forum. You have to understand that you open yourself up to anyone’s responses regarding your question, whether they are applicable or not. You can simply choose to not respond to questions you don’t want to answer.
You seem to think everyone is scolding you. I wasn’t. I said you didn’t have to take a full semester every time you needed to take a math class, and that a counselor should have helped you plan better. And you took offense.
You have your answer. You cannot get Pell for more than 150% of the length of your program, or 12 semesters.
