Are you at a severe disadvantage for an internship

...if you're at a community college? This is in regards to magazine internships. Thanks in advance!

Because you wouldn’t have a huge alumni network to draw from, yes. But if the CC was in or near a good city, you might have the opportunity to intern during the school year. It is far easier to secure internships during spring/fall semesters than during the summer, when everyone is looking.

Do you have the opportunity to work on a student newspaper or something similar to that? Experience will help. Freelancing credits would help.

wheatbread, do you mean to ask if you are disadvantaged to land opportunities close by because of the location of your school or because you attend a community college will make you look uncompetitive?

If it’s the latter, then I assure you it isn’t the case. I went to a community college and was selected for a prestigious paid program (one of few) at the Smithsonian last summer.

In fact, I think recruiters (generally) like when students with less resources are self-motivated and reach out.

Good luck!
