hmmmmmmmmm. george washington in dc looks like a good match - might as well be in virginia. umm richmond might be on the reach side with ur gpa, but id definately shoot for it. i'd say william and mary and uva are out - gpa too low. i'd say washington and lee is out too. what about virginia tech or jmu?

i mean theres radford and longwood - but you can get into better schools than those.

UVA is not an option. W&M would be a stretch, but considering how hard admissions have gotten there, I would say it's probably not likely unless you pull off straight As next year.

Honestly, none of Virginia's other schools are really much better than the others. Sure, Mary Washington might be better than Radford, but James Madison, George Mason, Tech, VCU, etc. are all about the same.

Basically, it boils down to what you want to major in and what kind of person you are.

If you're the preppy, involved type who loves school I'd aim for Tech or James Madison.

If you're the type that's generally well liked but is somewhat arty or distanced from your class as a whole, I'd aim for George Mason or VCU.

If you're the quiet type, Mary Washington's a good bet.

Again, find out what schools are good for what you want to study - that's most important. Otherwise, there's my two cents.

I think I want to major in Business, International Studies.. something like that. I know that GMU is good for that, but that school doesn't really appeal to me.

If I got straight A's next year, would that make me a good candidate for W&M?

Not a good candidate. I'd still say it is a bit of a reach but it will definitely help; especially if you write your essays highlighting your interests and academic progress.

You stats and Ec's look as though you would be a good fit for Virginia Tech, James Madison, Mary Washington...................all great schools. Tech being larger than JMU, and Mary Washington being just under 5K students. Don't discount completely UVA or William and Mary. Take your SAT's again, try to get those scores up. Go for straight A's in your senior year, but some would argue that the junior year has the biggest impact.
Radford, VCU, Longwood, George Mason, Christopher Newport............are NOT in the same league or level of difficulty for admissions as the schools I mentioned above. You have worked VERY hard in high school, have a good GPA, good class standing, good EC's. I predict you would not gain admission to W&M or UVA (but transfer if that's your goal....go for it), but I think you will do fine at Tech, JMU and Mary Wash. ALSO University of Richmond..................you have a very good chance there if money is not an issue for you. Good Luck, you are all set up to get accepted to a very good Virginia school! I am a freshman at William and Mary and am ony giving my opinion. Please take into consideration my lack of experience.

I'm hoping that I'll pull off straight A's next year and then colleges will see that in a positive way because my freshman year, my GPA was a 3.3, for sophomore year it was a 3.5, and this year, I'm almost positive that my GPA will be a 4.0 for the year and that shows improvement. Then for senior year, if I get straight A's, would it prove to them that I'm starting to get more serious?

pedsox, you're lucky to be at W&M. Maybe a miracle will happen and I'll go there, too. Thanks for that post, it was helpful.

Sunshinee, Contact the admissions office at William and Mary. Look into any overnight visits that you can arrange. Tour the campus, tour the campus again. Look into any programs of interest that they have for upcoming students. I attended the Fall Focus Days in my junior year of high school. Show your interest. Absolutely apply and just keep working hard and see what happens. Do the same with UVA. I really liked UVA a lot and have many friends there. I just fell in love with William and Mary in the 10th grade. It was my first choice. I am very happy here and it is a good fit for me. Allow yourself plenty of time to work on your essays. Be creative. As for William and Mary, do the optional submission. Again, I don't think I was a "shoo in" at William and Mary. I am an in-state male from a very competitive high school in VA Beach. I can tell you that the admissions office knew of my sincere interest in attending if offered. Good Luck! Also get an alumni rec, and if you have a teacher at your high school who is an alumni, have him/her write a rec for you. Make SURE you tour and apply to several other schools that you could be happy attending.

I don't know what kinda Virginian you are but Tech/JMU/Mary Washington are above VCU. VCU is more on par with Radford and Christopher Newport

Check collegeboard. Tech is easier to get into than VCU, no matter what people will lead you to believe.
