As many of you know, there is an intro course to your major that is one unit that you are blocked into as a freshman. I want to change my major, because I realized what I wanted to go into later on in my senior year. Is it REQUIRED to take the intro class before you start the switching majors process or am I able to drop the class with no consequence? I am taking GE’s, making degree progress, and have enough GE’s to be a full time student. Thank you for all your help!

This is a question for an academic counselor. I strongly suggest that you take action to change your major now and that starts with getting to know who your counselors are in your current major and in your new one.

My kid changed from General Eng to Mech Eng and was required to take the intro course. It was OK and allowed him get an overview of Eng in general. You will be required to stay in your current major for your first quarter. Then you can apply to change for next quarter. Make sure that you perform well and stay off academic probation. My kid had a great GPA after his first quarter and thus was allowed to change majors very easily with zero resistance. It required one meeting and as soon as grades were in it was taken care of electronically.

Keep in mind that major changes within your college are easy (i.e. GENE to ME in my kid’s case) and that changes outside of your college are more challenging (i.e. Business to Engineering). Start now.

Drop the class. Try to add an intro class that will apply to the major you want to switch into.
