Or is it possible just to carry them?
And how many bags of luggage are you bringing?

My mom is flying with me. We're each allowed 2 bags of luggage per person. My mom will let me use her luggage bags to hold more of my stuff. To reduce the amount of stuff we'll bring, we're utilizing the Pack & Hold feature at BB&B.

So everyone is shipping at least some stuff!?

Nope. Some people actually go to school in-state, believe it or not. It's crazy.

I'm taking 4 pieces of luggage with me when I fly over. I'm trying to avoid shipping anything because from where I live it's really expensive and just doesn't seem worth it. I'm only bringing clothes in my bags and will probably buy everything else when I get to school.

My dad is flying with me, and we get three bags each for a total of six.

So, six 50lb bags along with one or two huge boxes to be shipped.

I'm beginning to think it sounds like too much stuff.

which is the least expensive shipping company? I want to ship about 120 lbs of stuff from my old univ to my new one. Time is not a factor - I am willing to wait for 10 days for my stuff to arrive

the least expensive would have to be some form of ground, try DHL, just be advised nothing sent DHL ever gets there when they say it will, the price is deff right though

Well the reason is I am international and shipping will be expensive...

My family hosted an exchange student last year and she shipped a whole bunch of stuff back to China at the end of the year. It costs a lot of money if you want your stuff to arrive within a couple weeks and only about half as much if you're willing to wait as much as 4 months...I guess it depends on how much you are willing to pay and how much you can cram into your suitcases.

I'll be driving my stuff up with me. :)

After you move in, where do you put your suitcases/luggage?

If you ship college things, what kind of container do you use? Are we talking about something like a footlocker with a bunch of items inside, or several smaller packages, each in its own box? Do shipping services have common sizes of large boxes or crates, like the P.O. has standard size boxes?

I'm not shipping anything. It's being loaded into the back of a SUV and driven up.

My d kept one suitcase (under her bed). I brought the rest home. If you have to keep them make sure you fill them up (use them for storage).

my friends drove 500 miles and packed everything in the back of the car...paid a lot for gas..but they did a lot of sight seeing too....

I took all my stuff on Greyhound with me. Um, yes, that was a really really bad idea. Surprised I still have the stuff.

i left my stuff in my car for the summer (at somebody's house) and i had to come back to korea... so i'll be shipping my car with all my stuff in it and also taking two huge bags with me on the plane. That shall be interesting.. uh

i'm shipping most of my stuff, with whatever company that will ship over labor day weekend.

So far I have only checked out the United States Post Office.

Basically my daughter and I have decided to send her books media mail - which I use frequently. Be certain you only send books. The post office will often open these packages to be certain the mail is media only. Once I placed a cover letter over a manuscript and it was deemed first class. I was informed NO COVER LETTER.

Link here for media mail which comes to about 30 cents a pound for us: http://postcalc.usps.gov/

We are sending winter clothes via parcel post which comes to about 50 cents a pound. I am placing items in plastic garbage bags within the box in case it is damaged. I am using strapping tape. This is the clear plastic tape that has string embedded in it. We are giving them ten days for delivery.

The size explaniation is a bit archaic: http://postcalc.usps.gov/mailpiecedimensions.asp#LargePackage

Does anyone have any insight on DHL shipping costs per pound if you deliver to their shipping depot.

It just seems that going to the PO is easier for us and the PO will deliver to her dorm without any one being there especially to receive it.

We just do not want the hassle of meeting a freight delivery truck in NYC.

Thanks so much .. unless there is a better suggestion its the old USPO for us.
