Some of those colleges have an application deadline of January 1st. And some have a January 15th deadline. Either way, those deadlines have long passed. And my daughter is still getting emails, about half a dozen every day, telling her that they have extended their application deadline ... for some it must be the their 5th or 6th extension as it keeps on being extended by 2 weeks each time ... and that there is still time to apply. Worst part is ... that one of those schools she has already applied to ... back in November. And now she is so turned off by those emails that she doesn't want to go there even if she gets accepted.

The only comparison I can make is with an old fashion pushy used car salesman. And I am not talking about some unknown schools ... I am talking about some very well regarded academic institutions.

They have many times more applications than they can possibly admit. They have enough applications to form their freshman class any way they want. And I refuse to believe that they do that for $75 application fee. So ... do they really need to boost their selectivity index so desperately (which is all I can think of as a reason to continue to solicit applications this aggressively) that they are willing to risk their reputation?

Have other parents or their high school seniors received similar emails?

It seems for every school DS expressed interest, he’s still receiving “apply now - deadline extension” e-mails. These are Tier 1.5 and Tier 2 LACs. Seems that application counts might be down, and schools are anxious. DS has “unsubscribed” to most of these schools in response to these recent e-mails. Suggest you do same.

D has gotten several snail mail and emails since January, but not nearly 5-6 a day. We were surprised that any school would think she was still in the hunt this late in the game. Meanwhile, we are still awaiting decisions from 3 schools - why do they wait so late?

There have been e-mails and letters coming here. Some offer free applications. I think these schools want more kids because they may not have enough of the students they desire. Recent ones I recall - Duquesne, St John’s, American International College, Bethany. They all have high acceptance rates, so I think they must need more bodies. These are not schools she ever expressed interest in.

DS is still getting emails with extensions from schools mostly schools like Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. I think those type of schools are still looking for engineering students.

JRZMom, if it was from a car dealership, I’d find it amusing (yeah, they started sending me those trade-in offers only a week after purchasing a new car) … but coming from an academic institution of higher learning, it’s kinda sad.

I was actually wondering the other day about how many more applications they get by extending their deadlines. I mean it has to work or else they wouldn’t do it right?

Yes–emails and mail, especially from schools that have NM programs. Mail goes straight to the recycling bin, so I wonder what their yield is for these mailings. (YoHo, I like looking at the NYU catalogs. Seems like they always have something interesting going on.)

It has gradually tapered off to a few each week. One particularly persistent university in Texas sends something every week. It was kind of comforting for my son until he got his first acceptance. He figured he could apply if he was rejected everywhere else.

FWIW he had never even heard of this place, we live 1000 miles away and he has never expressed the slightest interest in going to Texas. I think it is NMF list related because that’s when the mailings started coming.

It must work or schools wouldn’t do it. Probably serious procrastinators, over reachers or worriers check them out.

Last year my son’s email was still full of “it’s not too late to apply!” emails from schools even well into April, and I think even beyond the May 1 deadline to put down a deposit. Most were from small schools he hadn’t heard of.
