Are you supposed to write thank you letters for scholarships you've received?

Is it common etiquette to write thank you letters out to outside agencies that have awarded you scholarships?

Absolutely.

Yes, absolutely.

YES! YES! YES!

[Notice how it’s 3 moms responding to this question?]

YES. (another mom checking in – my son was informed that his funds would not be released until the school got a copy of his thank you note – I’d like to think he would have written it anyway, but…)

thanks everyone!

When is the appropriate time to send the thank you note? Right after you’ve been awarded the scholarship? Or should you wait till the funds have been paid?

And what should you include in the thank-you note? What you plan to study? What you’ll do with your time instead of working three jobs to raise tuition money?

and who should you address this note to?

like I know for scholarships awarded by specific ppl who have their own scholarship foundations, I’d just address it to the head of the foundation right?

But what about scholarships from huge faceless organizations like National Merit Scholarship Corporation or big unions?

Hannah- Boy did you come to the right place- all of us lurking mothers are thank you note maniacs. Keep it simple! Just write it like any other thank you note- First line; thank you for xxx, then; I will use it to help me xxx, finally; It was very kind of you to offer the scholarship, and I am honoredxxx.
The more complicated you make it the less likely you are to actually get it done- the important thing is getting it on paper and in the mail.
Who to send it to? Surely you can find something- Dear members of union local 456, thank you…

i wrote ones to the ELKs lodge i got one from, and now im going up there soon. but for one from National Merit - i say that college board and the PSAT people got all of my money for every SAT, SATII, PSAT and AP i took - they are getting no thanks for putting me through study prep hell. isnt the test fee enough thanks?

(another mom here!) As for timing, I’d send the thank-you as soon as you receive official notification.

Who to address it to: The person who signed the letter notifying you. They will make sure to share it with anyone else who’d like to see it.

Agree with all above, I would suggest if it was a local endowed - type of scholarship (something like the Jones Family Scholarship or the Smith Family Foundation Scholarship) send it to the family that endowed the scholarship. You can send it to the foundation and then to the attention of the family.

For NM scholarship, if it was a corporate- or college- sponsored scholarship, direct a thank you to the sponsor, not NM. BTW, National Merit Scholarship Corporation is not owned by College Board, and is a not-for-profit organization. I’d encourage a polite thank you in that direction too. Despite the test prep hell.

thank you so much for all the help, CC Moms!! you’ve given me so much insight and i’m very grateful to you:)

i’ve gotten all my thank-yous written and they will all hopefully be mailed off tomorrow! i just hope i’m not too late…

It’s never too late to write thank you notes! All the best to you in your future.

I wrote my scholarship people a thank you card. It always pays to be on the good side of the people who are cutting you a check.
