so my parents basically believe that any education in the united states is not worth it besides that which comes with a degree from an ivy league school.

does anyone else has this problem, and how would/did you deal with it?

My parents are happy that im not going to community college, lol.

No, my parents would be super proud if I got accepted into an Ivy but couldn’t care less if I denied my acceptance for a state school.

Jk maybe that’s a lie. But my point is that they aren’t obsessed…at all

My parents believe in the value of an education, rather than the name attached to the paper.

i wish my parents were like that hah
they don’t even want to consider a “small school” (Pomona, Swarthmore etc)

personally, i don’t think ivy leagues are all that for undergrad…
unless i’m wrong, cause you know, that’s pretty possible LOL

I agree with Billymac.

a college without learning is just good paper work.

Don’t get me wrong a good college is a good college, but it doesn’t hafe to be THE BEST!!! to be good learning.

just cuz you don’t go to harvard, and go to standford or nyu or Evan smaller a name, doesn’t mean you won’t learn alot, and go far in life.

hahahaha if i got into one of those schools i would be overjoyed.
but still, i’m currently looking into smaller liberal arts colleges, and my parents obviously don’t support that decision…

any suggestions on how to sway their opinions? :/

I dont think the Op’s question is whether college is worth it. His parents are basically saying we have colleges in canada that cost less. Under what circumstances does it make good economic sense to send you to school in the US? They may legtimately feel only the Ivy league offers the prestige in canada to make up for the extra costs, distance and all around difficulties. Ohio state may give you a fine education, but will it open doors for you in Vancouver as well as a canadian college? This may be a valid pointand is a valid issue for all internationals.

Ya I would to lol

But Its what you love, and learn, not where or what other people would love you to learn.

well coming from a family that thinks graduating is big, and how sarcastic I am, I would say how do you know you didn’t graduate from there.

Besides that go somewhere you would like to go.

I plan on getting a major in physics and/or engineering and probably a minor in art though I love art and music…anyways

that is one of the bigest choices in your life, and it should be yours.

It’s as big as going to the army, but insted of dodging bullets, you’ll be dodging tazers ZZAAPPP!!!

No, my parents didn’t care when I decided not to apply to any Ivies, even though I would have had a decent chance at admission.

Oh, I didn’t notice that the OP was international.

Yes, it may be better for you to stay in Canada, since there are many top notch universities there. It may make more financial sense. However, there are obviously excellent universities not in the Ivy League Sports Conference, and there are many more schools where you can get as good an education as you’re willing to work for, Canadian ones included.

Good luck.

No I was talking to feathers about her question.

My parents are very typical Asian parents, and right now, they are completely set on me going to Stanford. They don’t like the Ivy League all too much because it’s too far away from Nevada. They have attachment issues. It doesn’t help that I’m the youngest. -_-

My parents believe that I could obtain as valuable an education if I sought it out at Boise State as I could at Harvard. In fact, the only one that pushes “ivies” and even thought about competitive schools was me. My parents would be happy to pay in state tuition, but are even happier to support me in what ever I want to do whether it be joining the forest service right out of High School and skipping college (considered haha) or going to Yale.

They say that if I don’t get into a top 20 school they’ll be “very sad”; and if I can’t get into even NYU I’m paying everything by myself. My parents are 100% Chinese.

This sucks because I think I’m falling for Michigan (imo low match school) and they don’t recognize how strong that college is in just about every department as they care about the prestige behind the name “UPenn” (which I’ve just about locked myself from getting in)…

My parents might as well be your parents. I don’t have an option back home though, so I’ll probably end up at NYU. They think I’m a loser for not getting into an Ivy and would not listen when I try to explain the logistics of Ivy admissions.

I’m from new York state. My parents preach a college that fits you, but my father wants me at Princeton or Amherst. Also, my mother would rather die than have me attend suny bing or geneseo

Nope. As long as I’m going to a good college and making my education worth it, it doesn’t matter to my mom what college I go to.

***, i wonder if this is an asian thing.
is it usually mostly asian parents who are really into the ivy league image?

sorry if this sounds kind of racist, i don’t mean to stereotype but it’s something that i’ve noticed…

my parents consider UC berkeley a safety
