Does anyone have any direct knowledge of the area around Muhlenberg? Are there commercial venues to walk to? Coffee shops? Restaurants? Shops? I’m trying to determine what is accessible without a car.
Muhlenberg is located in West Allentown. There are a number of commercial venues available within an easy walk. The school also has a shuttle bus that will take students to areas farther away from the school for movie theatres, malls, sports arenas, etc. Pretty much everything a student would want or need is accessible without a car. Best of luck to you!
Thanks @beenthereanddone! Very insightful and exactly what I was hoping to have illuminated for me.
When we visited, I found the immediate surrounding area to look like your typical suburb. We were there on the second day of classes and noticed a ton of students in the nearby Target buying things for their dorm rooms. There was a shuttle that took them there and picked them up. Never having been to Allentown, I found it to be an interesting little city. We drove in one night to go to dinner and while it was kind of empty since it was a Tuesday night, there seem to be a bunch of cute and hip restaurants we ate in a really great one called “grain.”, and yes all lowercase with a period at the end. The place seems straight out of Williamsburg Brooklyn, LOL. We also happened upon the Allentown fair, a pretty big country fair with lots of farm animals and performances. It was fun! And it didn’t escape my daughter’s notice that Dorney Park is right near the school too.
There are a bunch of shopping centers, but generally, the kids don’t walk to those, according to my daughter. I’m not sure how pedestrian friendly it is to walk to them. There is a farmer’s market that is open on certain days of the week that is walking distance. That is also where the fair takes place. There is also a dumpy, little sandwich place that I walked to with my daughter. The school provides shuttle buses to most of the surrounding shopping centers on certain days of the week. You can find the transportation routes on the Muhlenberg website. It is surpising that someone hasn’t taken advantage of the student population in the area and opened a hip little place for the kids to frequent.
