I’m a sophomore getting early start looking at schools. According to folks here at CC and WUE’s engine, UNM is a good fit for me. I have a 3.3 GPA (unweighted), and will take 4-5 APs by the time I graduate.
I’m hoping folks here can give me a sense of the school’s academics and general vibe.
@barbthewarrior
The general campus vibe is laid back, but there are opportunities to get involved in activist activities if that’s your interest.
Academics can be very good to excellent, depending on the department and major pursued. Fine arts are excellent with photography being a top 5 program nationally.
What areas are you interested in? If you can be specific, then you’ll get some more useful responses.
UNM offer classes in the Navajo language–something you won’t find anywhere else. Additionally, UNM offers Arabic, Chinese, Classical Languages (Latin, Greek), French, German, Italian, Japanese and Russian languages.
Spanish and Portuguese have their own department separate from the foreign languages dept and offer a deep dive into the language, literature and cultures of those countries. MA and PhD degrees in Spanish and Portuguese are offered by the university.
UNM has an interdisciplinary program in Chicano Studies that has threefold focus-- on Chicano culture, social justice/politics, esp w/r/t border issues, and the transnational US-Mexico border experience. (BTW, UNM is a Hispanic majority university.)

OMG @WayOutWestMom! This was EXACTLY what I was looking for! I hope to take AT LEAST 1 Spanish AP (the other might too ambitious). I also hope to have taken all 3 History APs. Activism DEFINITELY something I want! If I pick up 3rd foreign language, I’d waffle between Arabic and Mandarin (I’m part of my school’s Spanish and ASL Clubs).
I just realized I actually forgot to talk about my perspective majors! I’m looking at any combination of:
X-American Studies
Non-Christian religions
Gender/LGBT Studies
Disability Studies
Any Language relevant to group,1 and 2
Disappointed they didn’t offer Asian-American Studies (or if they do offer something like that, I didn’t see it)
There isn’t a department of Asian American Studies, but there are classes that explore the Asian American experience offered by various departments.
Try looking in the American Studies Department and the Feminist Research Institute.
