Area Hotels

Hey…anyone have suggestions for places to stay during Parents Weekend in October, or in August when kids are getting dropped off? We will be driving so we will have our car, but we hope to find a (reasonable) place fairly close to campus. When we went for admitted freshman day, the closest we could find was about an hour outside of DC. I know the school gives a list of places, but I was hoping for some “inside information”. Thanks!

My son is an AU graduate, so we had 4 years of visiting him. I nearly always used either Hotwire or Priceline, and I nearly always got a hotel in the Woodley Park/Dupont Circle area, which is on the Metro Red Line (same as AU). The 2 hotels I got most frequently were the Omni Shoreham (my favorite), which is a 2 minute walk from the Woodley Park metro, and the Hilton Towers, which is closer to the Dupont Circle station. Average price was probably $110/night - a great deal.

Oh, and we usually parked on campus for the weekend - free in the Nebraska Ave lot.

I have reservations for the Hilton for Parents weekend and at the Marriott at Woodley park for August - its slightly over $300 for two nights for each.

We got a double room (2 double beds) at the Georgetown Hilton for $124.00. In Oct, for parents week it’s $185.00.

When my parents have visited in the past, they’ve stayed at either the Holiday Inn at Georgetown (it has a shuttle to AU) or a hotel in Van Ness (I can’t remember the name of though). Van Ness is just one metro stop from AU. Neither hotels were too fancy, or really the best hotels, but they were cheap for DC and close by.

Also try hotwire and priceline. I stayed at a very nice Hilton in Alexandria for $50 a night (I had a car). If you have a vehicle staying in Alexandria isn’t bad at all. We were there in a little over 30 minutes. The hotel was quite nice and at that price I knew I had a steal!

My parents always stay in the Key Bridge Marriott. Its in VA and right across the bridge from Georgetown. My parents love it because its about 5 minutes from the campus, and you don’t need to deal with downtown DC traffic. When I have friends come and visit, thats where we stay also, its perfect and pretty inexpensive.
