Aren't SAT2s only used for placement?

According to the information Collegeboard, SAT2s are only used for placement (althought it is required to send it your scores to some schools). I wanted to know if this was true - because I'm thinking about taking mine over again for a few schools.... but if it's only for placement, I don't think I'll take it over!

Math2c: 720
Writing: 600 :(
Chemistry: 600 :-/

I'm applying to Yale, Stanford, MIT, Duke, Princeton, and I got into my other 2 colleges.... so...

Please tell me what you think! SAT2s for placement or admission? How do you know?

I'm pretty sure they are for admission as well. Why else would they ask that you submit them with your application? If they were simply for placement then they would ask you to submit them after you are accepted and enroll like is done at UNC-CH and NC State with the IIC exam.

I assure you it is not just for placement for Yale, Stanford, MIT, or Princeton.

I see what you mean... what about places that don't require them to be sent? I know that some colleges (ie stanford) only "suggests" for you to send them!

Thoughts?

You should probably retake at least the writing and chemistry and rush report the scores. Before you ruin a perfectly day in January, however, verify with the colleges that they will accept January scores.

Oh yes, I definitely see what you mean! And I will most definitely check to make sure that they accept January scores - I think only 2 or 3 of my colleges do. Ack.

I don't know if my Math score will improve much - I have a 780M for the SAT1 and i've taken all the math courses at my school....

Writing definitely needs improvement, and I could definitely manage that (way easier than SAT1 verbal, which I got a 690 on)!

Chemistry - I really need to bring this score up. This time, my older sister (chem major in college) tutored me for 3 nights until like 5am and brought my previous (and first) score of a 490 (EWW) to a 600!

Hopefully, if I study really hard over holiday break (while doing millions of other things for school), I can do well on the January one.

Thank you all for your responses, and I welcome any other replies!

Most schools that ask for SAT2s seem to expect to see a writing score, but if you feel it will be hard to improve the chemistry results, you might want to think about substituting a test in a diffeerent subject (which you can do at the testing site on that day).

quick question guys..
if i don't go to the collegeboard website and request for them to send my scores to the various unis, would they still send it to the places i've put down on my registration form?

Vandy uses them specifically for placement.

umm, SAT IIs are alot more important than you seem to think. If you're applying to those schools, I HIGHLY recommend trying to get those up into at least low 700s to even be semi competitive. When you have 20 thousand kids applying for 2 to 3 thousand acceptance letters, you don't want a weak testing record. How did you do on the SAT Is?

780M, and 690V :-/

My son had really good luck with PR Writing - other folks like Sparknotes. Not that hard to get a good improvement. You're just going to have to grind away at the Chemistry, though.

I took the Writing test in November and got a 640 with virtually no studying. Then I picked up a Kaplan bok, did the five practice tests, read the essay tips, and all in all spent about one week with the book and got a 740 today. A 100 point increase in a little less than a month; not too shabby. I recommend Kaplan highly, but don't use their curve; it's ridiculous.
To anybody who's willing to listen:
I have a 700 Math 2C, 720 Biology, and 740 Writing score along with a 1410 SAT (690V and 720M). How do you think I'll look score-wise at the Ivys (exluding HYP)? I hope I'm not below average!!
