i politely asked my teacher for the rec, which i gave her 3 weeks ago. she says she hasn't done it. i gently asked if she remembers the deadline, adding "im sorry if i forgot to inform you."

she says, "you're putting in an early application right?"
"yes."
"early deadline is november 15, right?"

i was shocked, but i quickly hid it.

"um, no. it's november 1. next tuesday."

this time it's her turn to be shocked. but she quickly hid it.

It's good that you followed up. It's always a good idea to follow up a week before a recc is due.

It's also a good idea to include the due date in writing when you submit the recc. Perhaps you did that, but I mention it because many students simply expect that teachers will remember that kind of thing even though teachers have many other things on their plate.

funny thing was, the rec itself had a bold print: Early Action deadline: November 1, 2005. Probably she was very busy or something (we have the A-levels exam going on now, and i know she's an invigilator).

Colleges give students a little slack if the teachers are late by a few days.

but i'm sending it together with my essays and stuffs. teachers write the rec and seal it, then hand it back to us. :(

"funny thing was, the rec itself had a bold print: Early Action deadline: November 1, 2005."

As you mentioned, teachers have a lot going on, so it helps to remind them a week in advance and to also give them in BIG BOLD LETTERS the due date in a memo when you give them the recommendation form.

It's important to realize that teachers may have many recc letters to write as well as other things, so they find the reminders extremely helpful. Also, some excellent teachers procrastinate just like students do. They manage to get things done on time, but it sure does help to have reminders. :)

oh well, she's giving it to me this monday, which means i can get it postmarked by the 1st, and it'll reach their office maybe 3 days later. God, please don't let them count this against me. clasp hands

Personally, I think it would be better to send your app in today and send the letter in when she gives it to you. You can put in in another envelope and send it along, and they will put it in your file. Don't let her hold up the whole application.

Are you going to send the application Monday afternoon after attacking your teacher Monday morning and gettin' the rec off her? chewing lip Happen to know anybody who works in the bank? (Or your parents know them?)
