I was trying to find some safety schools that I would actually like. I was successful, but I also wound up finding some more reaches. This time, though, I didn't confine myself to states just in the Mid-Atlantic region. So yeah, uhm, chance my new-ish list please?

Public School student going into senior year
Caucasian Female
3.81 UW GPA
1st Decile (class of around 600)
State: PA

SAT - 1950
CR - 650
M - 630
W - 670 (10 on essay)
Taking it again in October after studying. If I can up it into the 2000s/1300s, will my chances at any of the schools improve?

SAT II
German - 570 (taking at least two more so this one can be forgotten)

EC's

-National Honor Society
-won second place at the German Fallfest Competition at Millersville University
-scored in the 85 percentile on the AATG German exam
-vocal ensemble club during ninth grade
-Quizbowl during tenth grade
-working as a cashier at a supermarket for almost a year
- treasurer of Student Historians club at my school
-worked with special needs kids and helped them do crafts/helped organize activities for them to do (during school for the past two years)
-"Walking Tour"...about to be a tour guide for the elementary school kids for the second year in a row. I take them to different historically significant landmarks in our town and explain why they're important.
-Civil War Reenacting in Gettysburg for the past four years

APs: 11th grade I took Stat and got a 3 on the test (I suck at math). 12th grade I'm taking Economics, Biology, German, and American History

Other classes: Honors for everything except science, and I'm moving up to AP senior year. I also dropped down in math, wanted to move back up, but wasn't permitted. >:-(

Major: Undeclared

Fordham
George Washington U
Gettysburg College
NYU CAS
PSU (main campus)
SUNY: Buffalo
SUNY: Stony Brook
U of Delaware
U of Georgia
U of Maryland (College Park)
U of Rochester
U of Southern California (high, high reach, I know...but LA rocks!)
Wake Forest

Any suggestions for safeties or other matches? Thank you muchly.

Fordham - match/safety
George Washington U - low reach
Gettysburg College - match
NYU CAS - reach
PSU (main campus) - low reach/match
SUNY: Buffalo - ?
SUNY: Stony Brook - ?
U of Delaware - match
U of Georgia - match
U of Maryland (College Park) - match
U of Rochester
U of Southern California - reach/high reach
Wake Forest - reach/high reach

that's a really good list - not overzealous but still with reasonable reach schools
i think you have a really good chance at all of them

Oh...one more thing. Are you sure that PSU is a low reach? I've seen kids from my high school get into UPark with GPAs and SAT scores way lower than mine.

i dunno, I guess you may be right
i based that on the fact that it is a very accredited school, but you may be right in that it is easier to get accepted to.

Hm, so, question. What's hurting me for NYU and USC? If I got my SATs up into the high 2000s or 2100 range, and if I do well on the Bio and US History SAT II's, would they be not such reaches? Would NYU maybe be a match? If my SATs go up by a lot, could I also maybe consider Emory as a possibility?

Well, of course I would, because I work here. :)

You say you're undeclared, but is there anything you're thinking about? Maybe a general academic direction? Looks like you have pretty diverse interests, which is nice.

Yeah, the profession I've been thinking about the most is counseling. I could get a bachelors in Biology and then go to grad school for it. But my science background is very weak, as I didn't take honors 9th-11th grade. Plus I'm not 100% sure, so I'm just going to go in undeclared.

Someone told me that one of the SUNY's had good science programs. Was that Stony Brook or a different one?

That'd probably be us. We're something of the research hub for the SUNY system; we're probably best known in the sciences.

Ultimately, it's going to be your college science coursework that's going to matter most; those courses are taught differently from high school courses, honors or not. Either way, you don't have to definitely make that decision as to whether it's going to bio or chem or whatever for a while now. And if you're thinking counseling, then it might not matter which way you go anyway.

If you're thinking counseling -- have you given any thought to a psychology or sociology or social work kind of a program? We have all those options here as well. It looks like you're looking at big schools that give you a lot of options, so that's good.

Allrighty, I'll talk to my mom about it. We're already visiting GWU, Delaware, and possibly Rochester in the next two weeks, so I'm sure adding Stony Brook to the list would be fine. I like visiting schools, and since SUNY SB is more of a backup, I think it's important to see it, since I should like my backup schools, too.

I think you have a pretty decent shot at all the schools on your list. The only real reach is USC, which is tough for anyone to get into. As of SUNY Stony Brook, it is a very good school. I live 5 minutes away from it, a reason why I don't want to go there (I need to get away from my parents). Good luck!

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely try to talk my mom into visiting. Heh, I need to get away, too, which is why I might not apply to Penn State. SB's more of a backup because I'd really rather be in a big city...I was looking at the campus on Google Earth, and it looks like there are lots of trees and grass. Haha, not exactly my style. But I've got a pretty good shot of getting in, and it certainly doesn't look bad, so I'm going for it.
