Argument with Proctor

I took the SAT today and when I reached the free response questions in the math section, I wrote my answer on the right side rather than the left side (there are empty blanks on the left side rather than the right side). My proctor noticed that, and she asked me whether I’m supposed to answer it that way. I told her that on the PSAT, it was fine how you write the answer in the boxes - right and left. However, she argued back that I should have written my answers on the right side rather than the left side. She then went to the testing coordinator about this problem and said I was “arguing with her”, but I simply said one or two sentences. Since everything that happened in the testing room should be recorded and filed, the testing coordinator told me that she will file a report against me to College Board.

What will happen to my test score? Will my score be disqualified because of my “argument”? I was simply stating what I believed to be true. Please help!

The SAT grid-ins clearly indicate that you can grid in your answer in either orientation (e.g. 371_ and _371 are equivalent). You should be correct, and the proctor should know the rules of gridding in before proctoring.

Bad proctor. Sadly all too common.

Just as MITer94 said, the SAT directions say you can do it either way. If the proctor thought you were being sassy, unfortunately there isn’t much you can do. Your scores shouldn’t be canceled, however, and you did grid in the answers correctly. Just ignore the evil proctor.

Document everything that happened so it will be fresh in your mind if anything comes of it. Write down the exact sentences in the exchange and the names of the people who witnessed the exchange if you know them. Also, let your parents know so they can go to bat for you if this proctor makes trouble.
