Hi I've looked through past threads about the aris card already.. but I'm wondering, is it mandatory for the chem 6b course? does that mean I have to purchase the textbook at the bookstore instead of online?

I know it's supposedly "ucsd custom" but someone on another thread said that the text is only custom because of rearranged chapters and that it's a better plan financially to just get the whole book instead of in volumes..

So.. is it possible to get the textbook used online? Or should I get it in the bookstore b/c of the aris card?

atm I'm really only planning on taking chem 6b & 6c.

You can buy the normal edition but then you will have to purchase the ARIS card in addition to that. ARIS is the homework program the gen chem professors use. Your hw results factor into your grade so it is mandatory.

ok thanks for answering! I have a few more questions though, I heard the ARIS was $60 by itself? is that true? and where would I go to buy it? also, would I have to get a new ARIS the after each quarter? like after taking 6b I’m taking 6c, would I need a new ARIS then or does it just kind of rollover?

Yes, it is cheaper to buy the normal version of the book than UCSD’s custom edition, but like you already said, the chapters are rearranged differently (which is no problem at all) and you would probably need an ARIS card to do your homework. Each ARIS card lasts for a year. By the way I do have an extra ARIS card from 6C if anyone decides to buy the normal version of the book. :D

thanks for the info adl0816! I guess I’ll get the normal version used online then. are you planning on selling that extra ARIS card you have? if so you may have a potential buyer right here :)

Hi, I wanted to add on what was already mentioned above. Most of the Chem 6 series professors do use Aris… but some of them don’t. I guess it kind of depends on who you get. I took the entire series last year and used a different system for homework each quarter (Aleks, Aris, Mastering Chemistry). But if you buy it and end up not needing it the first quarter you can always save it, so just wanted to let you know! =)
