Arizona(full ride) or H?

This is abou My S.

U of Arizona Student. (GPA 3.72 LSAT 179)

Accepted by Arizona Law (ranked 44th Full Ride), Harvard Law, and Chicago Law. (U Penn (pending), Cornell(Pending).

He plans to live in Arizona after L-S.

Arizona (no Debt) vs Harvard (150K debt)

Arizona unless he wants to be a judge. He will do fine at AZ, especially if he wants to live there after graduation.

I'm a lawyer. Arizona would be better.

Arizona all the way.

Harvard law isn't what it once was.

Plus, no debt is always > 150k of debt.

For business and law in most cases I would say the name brand really matters, but since he wants to live in Arizona it makes it so the difference is moot, especially if he does well.

Harvard Law. Stupid question.

what's stupid about it? Who really wants 150K of debt instead of none? Topic orginator, do yourself a favor and disregard Gutrade's thoughtless reply.

Slipper, why a judge? What sort of judge? In my state many judges are elected (to our everlasting shame), so it helps to have those at home contacts - do you mean Federal bench?

Yeah, I was referring to Federal positions...

Your son will excel anywhere. I recommend Arizona...especially since he intends to live and practice in Arizona. Congratulations!!!

Honestly, my opinion should mean little to you. But I really like it when people seriously consider less well-known options in the face of heavyweights like Harvard, especially when they would be more beneficial in the long run for them. I think that is the case here. Either way, you've, like Alexandre said, got a great kid.

"Harvard law isn't what it once was."

Maybe, but it's still the best law school in the country.

You'd be crazy to go to Arizona over Harvard Law. It's not like you couldn't easily work off that 150k with your Harvard degree.

Then again, if he plans to live in Arizona, maybe it's for him...I guess I was just saying how I would feel.

Tough to always pass up on Harvard, but I think Arizona will better suit your son's needs.

Advantages of Arizona: graduate debt-free, ability to rise to top of graduating class, ability to network, name respected in-state

it's not like he will be disadvantaged by going to U of A. harvard's name is big, but being one of the top lawyers from the home state school will be more respected by those who he will work with in-state.

just my 2 cents

AZ, certainly. That debt is not worth it and the experience would be much less stressful.

Yale Law > Harvard Law

:p

Anyway, in the high power environments (east coast/ west coast) a top name degree is critical, but at the local level (i.e. AZ, FL, etc) its irrelevant.

If he goes to AZ and finishes in the 10 in his class - no difference in opportunities among AZ law firms. If he is out of the top 10 definitely he will have more opportunities by going to Harvard.

"Yale Law > Harvard Law"

You wish.

But, obviously, they are both so good it is fairly pointless to compare them.

If he is really absolutely going to stay in AZ, then going to school there, and if he is in the top of his class and Law Review, then working summers at top AZ firms will give him a solid start, perhaps better than Harvard.

But....does he really know that?? After second year top students get all sorts of opportunities to interview at top firms all over the country. Or his area of interest in law may change, and he may want to work at a Govt agency or Justice or clerk for a Federal Judge.

What area of law is he interested in, or what type of law does he want to practice/what kind of firm? Anything else but absolute knowledge that he wants to remain in AZ, and in an area of law that he can do there and study there, would dictate Harvard.
