Arizona State Honors College

Does anyone know the dirt on Arizona State Honors College?

I just got offered a substantial scholarship due to National Merit stuff, but I know very little about the program aside from their website and the basics from Princeton Review.

Help, anyone?

Don't go, I'm not.

There have been a lot of threads on this, do a search. It is a great program, good mentoring and grad school acceptance rates. In 2 years they will have a new campus and it will be better , right now the dorms for the honors college are pretty run down but the area where they are housed is a nice quad. I have heard the Barretts kids are treated like kings and queens on campus. There are good small honors classes which are excellent but you take 1 per semester . The other classes are large with TA's and all the issues that go with that, although there are smaller discussion groups 1 x per week for the large lecture classes. If money is an issue it is a good school, but still a state school. There is a lot to do in Phoenix with Mill Ave a stroll away, a great college strip, lots of great concerts and sports events close. Kids from our high school that go have had good things to say, a good education, without a lot of pressure, good study abroad and research opportunities. My S considered it but chose some debt at Pomona instead. The verdict is still out with my D but I think she will not opt for it.The new dean there is great and they are attracting bright students from all over the country. The weather certainly is beautiful. ASU is noted as a party school, the honors dorms are supposed to be quieter but still full of social students who do a lot together. It is not a nerdy group at all as some honors colleges can be, words from a current freshman. Worth a visit!

thanks to both of you. it's stuff like this i need to know.

If you are thinking about Barretts I would also suggest you like at University of Arizona's Honors College. It is more reputable and the honors dorms there are EXCELLENT. They also offer full tuition waiver for national merit (just contact them). Most people are much happier at U of A because it is a little bit more toned down than ASU; however, ASU is still an excellent choice. The new dean is really improving ASU (they are currently building a new research/technology facility not too far away). Even though ASU is quite large, the honors college is really a smaller more close-knit community. As arizonamom said, the Barretts kids are truly treated as royalty. You will find many highly-motivated students at both ASU honors and U of A honors. The honors dorms are much nicer than the other dorms (once again proving the point that honors kids are treated better). Arizona state schools really value their bright students and make every opportunity available. Arizona is in Tempe and is located in one of the best areas of phoenix - lotsa clubs/bars/things to do. Its worth a visit even an overnight stay. I would also suggest you check out U of A =D

Arizona weather is also known as one of the best. You will be in school from August-May (August/October are hot at 100s but it cools down to 70s in the winter and majority of the spring is still in the 80s). Bright sunshine to get a tan if you so wish =D.

However, being labeled a party school also has its down-sides. Many people find it hard to concentrate and do their work because everyone is having fun and their peers pressure them into going out and not really focusing (honors is a little less partying but most still do party a lot, more than usual). ASU kinda doesnt have the whole campus/college feel. Located in Tempe, its really more like a city feel and you wont get the small/college feel that a lot of people like. Also, dorms arent offered all 4 years, most move out their sophomore year to apartments and houses. and ASU has really bad food =D

wish you the best of luck choosing ur schools =D

The new honors dorms and campus at ASU would be complete by your junior year and will include great apartments on the honors campus for juniors and seniors. It will have more of a feel of a small liberal arts school with their own dining hall where professors eat with their students. Personally I would choose U of A over ASU for regular classes but the honors program at ASU is a closer knit program then U of A's. I think U of A is a prettier campus lots of grass, trees vs more of a concrete campus at ASU. More to do at ASU. Just my 2 cents. I have heard complaints from students this year at U of A's honors dorms that students are not social and it is hard to meet people, doors are closed etc. Those were just comments from 3 freshman from my kid's high school. I am sure it is not a representative sample.
