Arizona State or University of Arizona for engineering?

Hi!

I’m a junior from AZ, I have a 31 on the ACT (could probably bump it up if I need to), and I’m interested in studying engineering at one of these two colleges. Do you think one has a superior engineering program or does it vary by specific discipline? I’ve seen rankings where ASU is higher and others where U of A is higher, so specifics of why you believe one is better would be much appreciated. Also, what are your thoughts on the honors colleges at each university (and how competitive are their admissions)?

Thanks for any responses!

We investigated these two engineering programs a couple years ago with our older kid. They are both good. ASU has a much larger engineering department. UA is smaller. admits into Engineering undecided and you choose your discipline after the first year courses. I don’t believe it’s competitive to get into the specific majors at UA. Our kid preferred UA but didn’t end up attending either school for reasons unrelated to the quality of the engineering programs.
We’ve visited both honors colleges this year. UA honors college is smaller and seems to also be more competitive than ASU Barrett. UA’s admitted student profile is higher stats, if I remember correctly. We know someone this year who was admitted to Barrett but not the UA honors college. ASU Barrett is more expensive than the UA honors college as well. If you’re in AZ, visit both and decide which you like better.
