ASU President Michael Crow and the Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) announced the new ASU School of Medicine & Advanced Medical Engineering at a special meeting in Tempe on Thursday morning.
The new School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering will integrate clinical medicine, biomedical science and engineering in a new approach to medical school, Crow said, and will create “a new kind of physician engineer.”
He said the program will follow the design of similar schools at Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois.
ASU’s new medical school will be the 6th med school in the greater Phoenix area. Phoenix is already home to University of Arizona-Phoenix, Mayo-Arizona, Crieghton-Arizona, AZCOM (Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine) and AT SOMA (AT Sills School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona).
Besides the Phoenix area med schools, Arizona has another med school–University of Arizona SOM in Tucson.
