Hi! I’m freaking out a little over the college process, and I just want an honest opinion on my chances.
- I'm a junior in HS in Chicago
- I have a 2.8-3.0 unweighted GPA (junior grades aren't out yet, but I should fall somewhere in that range) and about 3.5 weighted. I have been in all honors classes and one AP class throughout my high school career.
- I have a 30 on the ACT
35 English
32 Reading
26 Science
25 Math
I fell in love with Arizona State the summer before my freshman year, and it has been my top choice ever since. I am planning on applying by the priority deadline (November 1). However, I’m scared that I won’t make it in because of my GPA. Is there anything I can do to boost my chances? Or is it not even worth applying?
Also, are there any other schools that could be a safety school for me based on my numbers?
I believe that a high school diploma & your ACT score will be enough to get you admitted. (ASU does not require any standardized test score, but if you have an ACT of 22 or above, you should be admitted. Or a 3.0 GPA or rank in top 25% of your class.
You have a good chance. ASU has and 82.5% admit rate. If your unweighted will be over a 3.0 it looks promising. Keep your grades and scores upward and onward for any summer and fall classes and stay in your ECs. If the rep is in the Chicago area meet with her or him. Good luck @allisonmai
https://admission.asu.edu/freshman/apply lists ASU admission requirements. If you complete the specified high school course work, then a 3.0 GPA, top 25% rank, 24 ACT, or 1180 SAT should be enough. However, some majors have higher standards to get direct admission to the major (see the web page and follow the appropriate links).
Also, does anyone know if it’s a guaranteed admission if you meet the competency and admission requirements? Or are you just put into consideration? Because I have seen people saying both, plus on the website it’s not exactly clear. It says;
Course competency requirements
To be admitted to ASU, you will need the following:
4 years math
4 years English (non-ESL/ELL courses)
3 years lab sciences (1 year each from biology, chemistry, earth science, integrated sciences or physics)
2 years social sciences (including 1 year American history)
2 years same second language
1 year fine arts or 1 year career and technical education
Detailed course requirements
Aptitude requirements
To be admitted to ASU, you will need one of the following:
top 25% in high school graduating class
3.00 GPA in competency courses (4.00 = “A”)
ACT: 22 (24 nonresidents)
SAT: 1120 (1180 nonresidents)
The “to be admitted to ASU” is what’s throwing me off. Does this mean guaranteed? Because that seems kind of too good to be true.
@allisonmai There are no guarantees but if you check off all those requirements you will see you are in a very good position. Apply
Good question @allisonmai. There have been prior discussions regarding whether one is assured of admission or whether disciplinary or criminal records can still affect one’s admission.
https://public.azregents.edu/Policy%20Manual/2-121-Undergraduate%20Admission.pdf says that 3.00 HS GPA or top 25% class rank gives assured admission, but mentions nothing about test scores (presumably allowing each campus to set its own criteria regarding test scores – UA and NAU web sites do not mention test scores in the same way that ASU web site does).
If you want to know for sure, ask ASU directly.
