I'm an Arizona resident choosin between Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles or University of Arizona in Tucson. I have a scholarship to UofA where tuition would be around 13k a year and I have a scholarship to LMU where tuition would be around 54k per year. Obviously that is a big difference although my dad says he can make it work. I'm just unsure whether I should save money now so I can ensure my parents can afford grad school or if the experiences I will face in LA be worth the money. Most of my family thinks I'd be dumb to not go for it and go to LMU, but I just want to make sure I'm choosing the best decision! Please help with any advice or tips! Thanks!

What in particular do you think makes LMU worth $164,000 more than UA?

What are your academic interests and professional goals? If you are a pre-med, consider how expensive medical school is – the $164,000 could help keep medical school debt down, allowing you more freedom to choose a medical specialty without having to try for the highest paid ones.

Just going by rankings, Arizona is #119, LMU doesn’t even make the national list, which stops at #201. LMU is #3 on the Regional-West list. This isn’t Harvard Vs. Arizona, it’s Arizona vs. LMU, and I’m not seeing LMU being worth $164K more unless there’s some hidden med school acceptance rate I’m not aware of. I’m sure both provide a fine education, but cost has to come into play at some point.

My son had a similar decision to make on the East Coast - highly rated regional Catholic (an hour from New York) school versus state flagship university. We told him we could make it work. Now if your father is anything like us it could mean it won’t be easy and might involve things like digging into retirement funds.

Also, I read another of your threads and you mentioned that you didn’t know what you want to study. Again, this is where my son was. The state flagship offered more possibilities. He eventually chose the state school and selected a major that was not available at the other school.

LMU isnt worth it. unless your parents are wealthy, this is a waste of their money.

You’d be craz to choose LMU @mom is correct LMU isn’t worth it. UofA is a great school you’ll love it, my DS11 is there and he is having the time of his life, great academics, lovely campus, friendly people.

you guys are wrong! LMU is a great school, gorgeous surrounding locations, campus is beautiful and they give good education. Choose lmu

@jays98 At a cost of an extra $41,000 per year, LMU isn’t worth it. The two schools aren’t drastically different in terms of prestige, quality of education, and notoriety. I think UA is the clear choice for the OP.

However, if your family is pressuring you to go to LMU, then for your sake, and peace of mind, do it.

What would make you even consider going to LMU over UA?

@jays98, I see from another post that you are a sophomore in high school. Pretty funny you presuming to tell people who actually have to pay for their children’s schooling that a beautiful campus is worth an extra $41,000 a year.
