Planning helps Armed Forces Bowl evade downturn

The 2008 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl is moving ahead with all guns blazing despite the downturn in the economy, and bowl organizers said advance planning helped them evade the worst of the recession’s effects.

The University of Houston will take on the United States Air Force Academy in Fort Worth on New Year’s Eve at Texas Christian University’s Amon G. Carter Stadium, fresh off the August completion of its $13-million facelift that added 25,000 square feet and 250 club seats to the 44,358-seat stadium.

Last year, a record 40,905 people filled Amon G. Carter Stadium on a cool, sunny day to watch the University of California-Berkeley Golden Bears defeat the Air Force Academy Falcons 42-36 at the second annual Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl.

The bowl – currently six games in but three under its current moniker – has become increasingly popular since its inception, likely due to its new post-holiday date and football fans’ appreciation of the theme – a celebration of all things military.

Brant Ringler, senior manager of sales and marketing, said military presence is proving to be stronger than years past, which also will help the bowl inch closer to the 2007 attendance level.

“I believe everything has gone according to plan, we’ve had an increase in military ticket requests, which are underwritten completely by our corporate sponsors,” said Ringler, adding more than 4,000 military-related ticket requests have been made, compared to about 2,500 in 2007. Also, about 1,500 people are expected to arrive from Fort Hood and more from Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio. “So all in all, we should have about 8,000 to 10,000 military folks in the stands.”

Two of the most underrated young coaches will square off when Air Force's Troy Calhoun matches coaching wits with Houston's Kevin Sumlin. It should be a classic matchup of Air Force's potent rushing game against Houston's offense, which led the nation in total offense.

Keep the momentum going: The second round of bowl games will have a lot to live up to after the excitement the first week produced. Look for another set of games with close scores and a lot of offense.

Revenge is sweet: For the second consecutive week we'll have a rematch, this time between Houston and Air Force which played their first meeting in a hurricane in Dallas. With no inclement weather on the horizon, Houston's aerial offense will be looking to attack.

Nine more wins: Air Force exceeded expectations for the second consecutive season and are now in line for their second consecutive nine-win campaign. They'll have a tough time getting it against a Houston team that is playing about as well as any team in the country right now.

Game Day...it's finally here (yeah).

Go Falcons - we'll be watching from home this year. Can't wait to see the team and the drum and bugle corps in person next year once son's attending.

What time is the game? And will it be televised?

Nevermind! I read this post earlier and forgot it's at 11 for me! Go falcons!

It is on ESPN right now.

tough half for squadmate harrison... made the 55 yarder only to have it not count b/c of the last-second timeout. still one of the best kickers in college though :)

Some cheap stuff, but we held together well most of the game.
