Army gets bowl invitation

August 29, 2006

San Diego — Bobby Ross and his Army Black Knights will be playing in a bowl game in a Navy town — if they can win enough games this season.

Poinsettia Bowl and Army officials have scheduled a teleconference for this morning during which it's expected that the Black Knights will be invited to play a team from the Mountain West Conference on Dec. 19 at Qualcomm Stadium.

The invitation is good only if the Black Knights go at least 6-6. Based on Army's recent history, that could be a mighty big if. Army hasn't been to a bowl game since 1996, when it lost to Auburn, 32-29, in the Liberty Bowl.

Then again, Ross has a history of turning around moribund teams. Ten years after being chased out of San Diego, he remains the only coach to take the Chargers to the Super Bowl.

The Black Knights were 4-7 last year, their second under Ross. They won only two games in his first season.

Army started last season 0-6, then won four straight before losing to Navy.

Ross was the hugely popular coach of the Chargers from 1992-96. His teams made three playoff appearances in five years, including reaching the Super Bowl after the 1994 season.

Ross was forced out following the 1996 season, after losing a power struggle with then-general manager Bobby Beathard.

Poinsettia Bowl officials declined comment. However, they've spoken in the past about wanting to have Navy and Army in some kind of rotation. Navy played in the inaugural Poinsettia Bowl in December, beating Colorado State 51-30. Earlier this year, Navy reached an agreement with the Meineke Car Care Bowl that could put the Midshipmen into the game when they're eligible.

Under an NCAA bylaw that went into effect earlier this month, a team can go to a bowl game with a 6-6 record if a contract is in place before the first game of the season. Army opens Saturday night at Arkansas State.

If Army ends up playing in the Poinsettia Bowl this year, I nominate shogun to organize the Black Knights' tailgate! As a USC parent, he probably has vast tailgating experience at the Coliseum in L.A.’s Exposition Park. Just move it a little further south by about a hundred miles. I’ll be there in Navy Blue and Gold! (Somehow I just can’t picture Army playing a bowl game in San Diego, a Navy town if there ever was one--is this a sick joke?)

Go Navy! Beat Army! :)

Its gonna get worse for Navy this year before it gets better!!!!
Watch out swabbies!!!!

First the Irish go down (as usual), then the good humor boys bite the dust!

Bobby Ross will turn San Diego into an ARMY TOWN!!!!!

No, USMA will turn San Diego into Army town... That would mean we all have to go to the Bowl game...

Midshipman graduates first in Army Ranger School

Midn. 2/C Tim Sheehy accomplished a nearly impossible task that takes ''Beat Army'' to a whole new level. Last summer he attended the 62-day Army Ranger School and graduated first in his class on Aug. 4.

''This is a huge accomplishment,'' said Army Capt. Lee Dingman, the Army exchange officer at the Naval Academy. Dingman, who is also a Ranger, believes that this is the first time that a midshipman has graduated from the school.

Incredible feat for this young man! It is absolutely unthinkable that a cadet/midshipman from any academy (unless they had prior service) could accomplish this. His motivation (not to mention intestinal fortitude) has to be beond what most of us can understand. This from someone who has been around Rangers and Ranger school most of her life, and has an understanding of what it entails to even graduate. Congratulations to him!

there are like 150 cadets (who are at that point 2LT's) who go to ranger school every year...how is that unthinkable?

i think shes probably referring to the fact that ranger school is loaded with people that have been in the army far longer than almost all cadets and midshipmen and as a result it is very impressive if someone with just 4 years of military experience, which in reality is just 4 summers of actual field experience could beat out everyone else in a class of grizzled veterans.

they are not in the army "far longer than cadets" usually, 2LTs go to ranger school pretty soon after graduation. it is an accomplishment to make it through ranger school inj any regards, not just because he was a midshipman.

READ the article. He went to Ranger school his 2nd summer (that already put his at a disadvantage) -- and graduated number one. That is unbelievable. 150 new 2nd LT's go every summer, but how many take the # 1 slot in the class? How many don't graduate? It IS an incredible feat.

i know it is, but i think she was just posting this on the west point forum under a post entitled "Army gets bowl invitation" to get a rise out of some people, like the midshipmen have something to prove. finally, a midshipman didn't spend his entire summer on a boat.

Uh, Homer, that would be a ‘ship,’ unless of course the midshipmen were on the sailing team (and then that would be his/her summer on a boat)…maybe I should have included a smiley face because my post was only intended as friendly ribbing. As a matter of fact, all of the USNA/Navy people I know have a tremendous respect for the Army/USMA. It’s kind of like a mutual admiration society, but at the same time a long-standing rivalry!

GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!
