Army Reserves and College Process

My son was accepted into his two top choice schools but has now decided to enlist in the Army Reserves. It is his intention to start one of these schools in the Spring of 2023 instead of Fall of 2022 as he will be in boot camp and specialized training. His recruiter is telling him that the school has to defer his entry to the Spring of 2023. If we paid the deposit does anyone know if we will lose the money? I am also curious about financial aid, scholarship and grant awards he has been offered. Will they be rescinded because he will be starting a semester later? Can anyone speak to their experiences? I am also interested in hearing about what the Army will assist him with financially for college so we can plan accordingly. Thank you for all that have served our country! Ps. He isn’t joining the Reserves for money, he feels that it is everyone’s obligation to serve.

The school is required to follow certain requirements for service members. The best thing to do is contact the person at the school who is in charge of veterans services. At some schools, the veterans office is great - at others, it might just be a single person who is tasked with helping veterans. Although he isn’t a vet, this is the office/person who will be in the best position to advocate for your S.
