Army ROTC

Hello all. I plan on joining Army ROTC my Junior year when I arrive at my University. I am doing it because I feel like a Military background will help me tremendously with what I want to do. (I.e join government, etc).

Can anybody tell me what it's like, how to join, whats the contract, fin aid, etc?

I appreciate all of your help. I've read online at some stuff but personal experience would probably be better.

If you plan on joining as a junior, you have to take a “course” the summer before your junior year. It’s not just a show up on the first day of class and jump in type situation. You also have to get advanced standing (that’s what it’s called in Navy ROTC), which is required by junior year (if you don’t have a scholarship).

Are you a sophomore right now? If so, contact the unit asap and talk to them about the process of joining the battalion.

As for what it’s like to be in ROTC: I can only speak for Navy ROTC. As a midshipman (or cadet), you have a pretty different lifestyle than that of a regular college student. ROTC requires a lot of time and responsibility, don’t expect it to be a once or twice a week thing. You are always in ROTC, not just when you’re with the unit. You might have study hall, an officer billet, people you’re in charge of, etc.

I’ve really enjoyed being in ROTC. I’ve learned a lot and become a lot more responsible (I hope so, at least!). I’ve found something I love doing and career I’m going to be proud of.

Do you have any specific questions on what PT or lab is like?

If you know where you’re going to be in the fall you should get in touch with the battalion asap!

To join ROTC as a junior, you will need to go through LTC, a leadership training course that takes place in Fort Knoxx, KY, this coming summer.
You should definitely get in touch with the battalion ASAP!
