Arrival Day-- Help!!

Will be travelling alone from JFK airport to Ithaca after a 14 hour flight... if I take greyhound's bus to campus, do I board at the Greyhound Bus Terminal? And how far is it from JFK?? Does anyone know? I need to budget the time needed to transit and bringing all that stuff alone. HELP!!

Poor you. This is precisely the reason I decided to pay $300 more for the flight to Syracuse instead.

My friend (who is travelling via JFK to come to Cornell this autumn) told me that the greyhound station isn't that close to JFK, so he's planning to catch a cab or something.

Greyhound departs from the Port Authority Terminal in Manhattan (near Times Square). Taxi from JFK to Manhattan will cost $45 plus bridge toll ($4) plus tip (15%-20%). The trip takes 30-60 minutes depending on traffic. For more information, you can google "Greyhound" and "John F Kennedy Airport New York".

Oh dear- let's try to make the day(s) a bit more easy on you. I think you have a couple of options- but none of them are great.
As goldtx said- you can take taxi from airport to Port Authority. There also seems to be a bus from JFK which will take you to Port Authority too. It runs frequently- cost $15 and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The website is nyairportservice.com. Also I do not think Greyhound goes directly to Cornell campus. I believe the Shortline/Coach bus company has scheduled buses to Cornell and stops directly on campus. My daughter used the Shortline bus several times, as we live in NY so I think it is a better bet than Greyhound. Another possibility is to fly directly from JFK airport to Syracuse via Jetblue airlines. I just checked the website- you may be able to fly to Syracuse for $99.00 which is a pretty good deal. I know there is some bus or limo service from Syracuse to Ithaca, but I am really not familiar with it. Keep in mind, the bus trip from Port Authority to Ithaca is about 5 hours. Think about these options and maybe someone else can suggest something more. Good luck.

thanks marny1!

Yeah that's the airport bus I'm thinking of. :) Shortline was another option I was thinking of-- does it depart from Port Authority Terminal as well? I'd rather not take another flight because the previous trans-Pacific flight already has two transits and the risk of flight delays could be high.

Shortline also departs from Port Authority so you should be ok. I am almost positive Shortline/Coach stops on campus while Greyhound goes to bus terminal in town. I hope someone else confirms this as you are going to have a rough travel day and I do not want to give you any misinformation (but I am pretty sure I am right) .

No I just checked on shortline's website. Yep, several dropoff points on campus. THANK YOU so much. Your help meant a lot. :)

You might want to make things easier for yourself by shipping as much of your stuff as possible rather than carrying it.

You may want to contact this company about shipping: http://www.bigredboxes.com/

Damn, JFK to Ithaca is going to be like 5-6 hours.

Sshh Spanks- It's going to be more than that! Figure close to 2 hours going from JFK to finding the Shortline buses (I think it was on level 3 or 4 of Port Authority) to Cornell. and at least a 5 hour bus trip from Port Authority to Cornell- but I think it's direct trip and you do not have to change buses.
Then if she gets to Port Authority at some ungodly hour, Leigh may have to wait awhile for the next bus to Cornell. I didn't want to be that specific, cause she is going to have a hard enough time dealing with it.
Leigh- you can do it darling! Just take some good books or magazines along. And I would take alot of candy along- but that's just me!!

Haha thanks. I should be fine actually, since I've been travelling on my own regularly since 13. :) Once the route's worked out I should be alright.

lol just read Gatsby during the trip

jamison are you already at Cornell?

Nah but I only live 30 minutes away from Ithaca.

COACH USA is the bus that runs directly from north campus/collegetown/ithaca to new york and places on long island. check it out

A lot of the needed information can be found here:
http://www.cuinfo.cornell.edu/Ithaca/Travel.html

CMB- Coach and Shortline are the same busline. I think the actually buses may be designated as the Coach Line but the website shows Coach and Shortline as the same company.

Just curious, did you say 14 hour flight from London to JFK? Closest thing I've flown is Amsterdam to Orlando, but that was only 8.....

That said, good luck with the trip! I can sympathize with the long travel times; I drive up to school from central FL, and I like to do it in one shot (19-ish hours). The bus ride probably isn't going to be much fun, unfortunately, but hey, when it's over, you will have a lot to look forward to. And if you get lucky, maybe you will meet some other new Cornellians along the way.

Also, one more thing, out of curiosity, do you have to come early because you are an international? I know they make a lot of internationals come early, but it seems its more aimed at kids from countries whose cultures are wildly different from ours here in the states, and thus may need some..."cultural sensitivity training" (cough...Arjun...cough). Are you exempt from that? I frankly haven't met a lot of Europeans at Cornell so I'm not entirely sure what the deal is with that.

No, 14 hours from China to JFK. I travel a lot :p

I wish I could come early, but was in Egypt for a month and missed the international orientation signup deadline last month. It's probably also oriented towards first years, and I'm a transfer from London, so...

Oh! And I'm Asian, not European. Sorry if the profile was misleading people!

i'm leaving on August 7th from LAX to Syracuse for the Wilderness Reflections trip. I was wondering what the best (and by best, i mean cheapest) method of getting to Ithaca was. I saw the $55 bus or limo thing, but was wonderin if there was anything cheaper. Does Cornell provide some sort of airport-to-school bus service of any kind?
