I am rising Senior looking to apply to UCLA's Art Program this fall.
My concentration would be Photography.
I was wondering if any CC members could give me an idea of how difficult admissions into UCLA's Art Program is?
My grades are "decent", but likely not UCLA level.

3.5 UW 3.79 W (this doesn't include 2 photo classes and 3 social science classes taken at colleges which may boost these stats a point or two) I have always had a rigorous Honors/AP schedule
1920 SAT (retaking in a few weeks)
Internship at Art Council and another one with Photographer/Production Company
Participation in over 100 community service hours
Member of Specialized Political Science Program at my school (9th-12th grade)
2 National Photography Contest Wins in past year

I am engrossed by photography, but do not have much experience in other areas of art such as drawing, painting, and ceramics.

My questions:
1. Do you think that my Stats will kill my chance at being accepted into the Art program?
2. Do you think that having the majority (basically all) my experience in art being related to Photography will deem me unfit for the art program?

My daughter is a new freshman Fine Arts major in the School of Arts & Architecture. Her stats were slightly better than yours (not by a ton) but she had a killer submissions portfolio. She is talented in many forms of art but she felt her photography was her strong point last winter so she submitted 10 photos to UCLA.

If accepted you will be required to take 3 or 4 studio art classes and only one will be photo. UCLA wants you to see things in different ways and they believe painting, drawing and ceramics studio time will improve your photography. I agree.

Also, as a photo fine art major the bulk of your photo classes will be taught be Welling and Opie, two of the very best in the fine art photography world.

IMO, UCLA - Arts is the best art undergrad program in the country and maybe the world. Others might challenge me on that statement but I’ve seen enough to know the best and it’s UCLA.

A killer portfolio is needed to enter. By “killer” I mean this: about 800 students will apply to UCLA-Arts this winter for about 60 freshman seats. About 50 of those seats will be occupied by kids with strong (not killer) portfolios but better stats than yours. So that means if your portfolio is one of the top 10 out of 800 submitted then you have an excellent chance to be admitted. Not putting pressure on you, just telling it as it is.

I strongly encourage you to apply and I’m happy to answers any questions that you might have.

well that’s good that in very few of students were selected and congratulation and i am also interested in art because from child hood i like this field and who knows what is art they see there self in a good position in future

Did your daughter apply to department of art or department of design media arts?
I am unsure which one to apply to. My work will consist of photography

CreativeGirl000,
My daughter applied as a Fine Arts major. The Design Media Arts major (DESMA) is even tougher to get into than the stats I quoted above. Carefully read through the UCLA-Arts website to understand the DESMA major vs Fine Arts to determine which is best for you.

Post or PM your portfolio link if you would like any feedback.
