Art and Computer science

I am beginning to think more seriously about college selection. I would like to double major or major/minor (not sure which would be the major and which would be the minor if I did this) in Computer Science and Art. I really liked Carnegie Mellon's interdisciplinary program for this, but Carnegie is very difficult to get into (I have a shot but it's definitely not a given) and is also a lot farther from home than i would really prefer, so I'm trying to find other options.

What are some good schools that are very strong in these two areas? I love in Massachusetts and it would be preferable if it was within a few hours from home, but I'm open to looking into anything. I am a good student so I'm trying to shoot high.

Thanks!

Brown is another place to look, not only for it’s CS and VA departments but also because of the joint-degree program at RISD. Of course it’s quite challenging to get into but it’s definitely worth going on your list.

I’m not that knowledgeable about CS, but some colleges in or near MA with good art departments are Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Skidmore, Smith, Conn College.

Conn College has a neat interdisciplinary certificate program that combines art and technology

Thank you everyone! =) I shall look into all of these suggestions.

I’ve definitely looked into the RISD/Brown program and it looks like it would be great… if I could get into it. Which would definitely be difficult, considering that the program accepts only 13-15 people per class… I think I could get into Brown but getting into RISD I think would be more difficult (but then, I have this image of RISD being impossible to get into… I don’t know how accurate that idea is in reality).

I’ve also been thinking about BU a lot lately, as a friend of mine is headed there today actually… is it a strong school? Does anyone know how its Art and CS programs are?

Once again, thank you. =)

Just so you know, as a Brown student you can take 4 courses at RISD without any special permission, plus we have a strong VA department in our own right.

I was just poking around the VA section of Brown’s website, Modestmelody. I’m a little confused though…I understand that the VA program is a concentration, but what exactly does that mean? I’ve heard the phrase concentration used as in, “Major in Math with a concentration in Accounting”, or some such thing… is that also how Brown applies it? Would I major in Computer Science with a concentration in Visual Arts? The sound of that is a bit different than how I’ve heard it used before - I thought a concentration was a particular emphasis on a subdivision of a major.

At Brown a concentration is the same as a major anywhere else.

Oh, I see. That seems obvious now… =P But then it often is in hindsight.

This puts brown a lot higher on my list again now. Definitely something to keep in mind. =) Thanks!

FWIW, you can also create your own concentration at Brown. We had someone recently graduate with a CS/VA combo degree (I forget the precise title).

I applied to colleges as an Art history/Comp Sci major lol. It helped… a lot.

Check out Tufts… They have an affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

I have no clue about their CS program, but The Art Institute of Boston At Lesley University is an interesting program in Cambridge/Boston area.

Or, you can do digital media design at Penn and save yourself the hassle of double majoring.
