I’m looking for an university with strong visual arts and design programs. I still don’t know for sure what I want to major in so I want to go to a school that offers different programs within these areas (such as visual communications, media, design and fine arts).
I prefer an university over an art school because I want to be able to minor in other areas.
Any suggestions of public AND private universities? Location is not a problem.
Thank you
Use a search engine like Big Future that lets you search colleges by major, then read the website of the art and design departments carefully. Art admissions often requires a portfolio review, and it may not be allowed to submit your portfolio for multiple majors at once. You can use college visits to see classes and get a feel for what major is right for you, or you could hunt carefully for schools that are more flexible.
@julianakgodinho my D felt the same about wanting an art program in a larger university and there are several very nice programs across the country. We found most of them by looking at the National Portfolio Day website. Figured if they were attending a Portfolio Day then they had to have a strong program. These are the ones she looked into just to give you an idea. In the Northeast/MidAtlantic there’s Northeastern, University of Hartford, Syracuse, RIT, Alfred University, Temple University, VCU, and UMBC. In the Midwest, the standouts were University of Michigan, Miami University, and University of Cincinnati. And the West Coast was UCLA. We didn’t really look into the South or Southwest. After touring most of them, and applying to over 10, she chose Temple because she loved the new facilities, the campus vibe and Philly.
