I know Williams has a great reputation for Art History, but what about Studio Art? I see it is offered as a major, but am wondering about the strength of it. Thanks.

inparent, At Williams the Art Department encompasses both Art History and Art Studio and there’s a lot of interaction between the two disciplines. Students can choose to major in one or the other or do a combined major, which is what my son did.

The studio facilities are beautiful, fairly new, spacious and well equipped, with fine exhibition space. The faculty are accomplished artists with reputations beyond academia. The focus is on more traditional media – painting, drawing, sculpture, print making, photography, architecture, and less on new media or graphic arts. The classes emphasis process and students get a lot of support in learning to master media new to them.

Not printmaking, alas. My D is a printmaker and when she got to Williams she was told that they had sold all of the printmaking equipment. My D is looking with some friends to see about renting some space and equipment in North Adams instead, which is a shame-- also no teacher in the field so they will have to find some printmakers in the No Adams community.

There is a wonderful recently build new media studio with a great deal of computers and assorted gear for working on this art form. There is little for graphic arts.

etondad, I’m not an expert in the field so I don’t mean to challenge your information, but what about the courses taught by Barbara Takenaga? She was a huge influence on my son’s interest in lithography. Perhaps what you’re daughter is interested is another type of printmaking.

I took classes with Takenaga and she’s great. Not sure about the current state of printmaking @ Williams, though.

When I visited the art building during re-visit days last April I asked the professor giving the tour where the printmaking studio was and she told me that they had recently sold all of the equipment. Now my D is a screen print maker – maybe lithography is different, but there are no more screens at Williams…alas.

Top notch Museum of Art there.

MOCA, the Clark and WCMA to name but three…

Do international students have to take SATII if they’re going major in Arts?

I think they are required for all students regardless of their academic interest.

The website says that: “International applicants must submit results of the SAT or ACT (with the writing section) and, if possible, two SAT Subject Tests.”

[Admissions – Williams College| International Application Instructions](http://admission.williams.edu/apply/international/instructions)

So it is not absolutely required.

Needless to say that the best is to send an email to Williams admissions and explain your situation.
