Art Classes and "Junior Projects" for Nonmajor

Hi,
We are wondering if anyone on board takes art classes as a nonmajor. DD has a major interest in representational art, but will likely major in science or engineering. Some schools won’t allow nonmajors to take art, or it’s logistically impossible. Feedback??? Thank you!!!

lol Reed is a liberal arts college; of course your daughter can take art. I am a math major, but I spend a good amount of electives in Russian literature & theater.

Sorry–I didn’t see this was in the Reed forum till after I posted it, but I’ll leave it up FYI.

This varies from school to school and is a good question to ask during interviews, or email a question to the admission rep (demonstration of interest!). The answer can often be found on the college’s website, but good to confirm.

This was a deal breaker for my D. I believe all the schools she applied to accommodate nonmajors in art classes. I don’t have all our notes anymore but one school actually strives for a balance of 50-50 majors/nonmajors in art classes (might be Carleton).

So I’m pretty sure all these colleges allow nonmajors in art classes:
Skidmore
Denison
Lewis & Clark
Kenyon
Dickinson
Earlham
Grinnell
Oberlin

As to “logistical impossibility” you never know for sure. My D had a conflict between a specialized science course and an unusual foreign language. Only one section of each and at the same time. However she is happily enrolled in an art class that probably takes up more of her time than anything else, but she lives for art, so it’s all good.

Great list…thank you!!!

Anyone can take any class (that they have met the prereqs for) in any department. Everyone is required to take two units from ‘Group A’ to graduate. Group A is art, literature, philosophy, religion, etc.

As a STEM major your daughter could meet her group A requirement by taking art classes. She’d be able to take a couple more beyond that, too, if she wanted.

Thank you, Reed2020!

No, group A cannot be fulfilled by studio art classes – it has to be art history. Studio Art does not fulfill any distribution requirement – you take it because you really want to.
