Art colleges vs. national universities

I am pretty interested in design and have looked at a couple of art colleges such as CCA, RISD, and ACCD. I have been drawing and making things since a young age. However, I fear that getting into an art college might narrow my interest in other areas such as humanities and social sciences. Is it possible to apply to both types of colleges, one in product design, one in sociology (for example)?
Urgent! Thanks a lot!

Not sure I understand - can you apply? Of course.

But you will only go to one - unless you find schools to go part time and take a few classes at each - but then you’ll be 8 years to get two bachelors, etc.

RISD, for example, offers liberal arts classes and cross registration with Brown so you can take classes of interest.

I would check for each school you are looking at for requirements and for opportunities to study alternate subjects.

Good luck.

You might check out VCUArts. I believe it would give you access to the breadth of classes at VCU as well. VCUArts is a very well respected art school w/in VCU.

You can also study art at a university that is not a specialized art school.

Hi thank you for you answer! I know that RISD and Brown dual program! But it is very very hard to get in! Most of the students apply the same type of school with the same major, so I don’t know is it possible to prepare for both, academic and portfolio take a lot of time.

Yes. But only a few offers design classes, and I don’t have a lot of choices really.

Thanks a lot! I will go check!

Worth a look. I was looking at it the other way round for my D22. She wants to major in something else (English/Creative Writing), but also take art classes. They do allow non VCUArts students to take some of the arts classes if they aren’t full so that is good. I think/hope it would work the other way round for you too. I really liked VCUArts.
