art history at yale

how is it? tell me more....

It’s the best in the world.

That’s what my interviewer said. We had been discussing art history for a good bit of the interview and then I said I wanted to major in linguistics. “What about art history?” = words that cracked my certainty.

Art history is the shift!

i think its one of the better art history programs…

I’m not sure about the quality of Yale’s art history program as compared to others (although I think its fairly safe to say that any Yale program guarantees a certain level of quality and prestige!), but I can add that when I toured Yale, my tour guide was a junior art history major from the Jonathan Edwards campus. She said that she had to to Yale as a Classics major and had dedicated most of her high school career to pursuing Classics-related interests, but when she got to Yale and took and art history course as an elective, she fell in love with the subject, professors, and program.

I hope that helps! Her change of heart and passion, I think, should stand testament to the program’s credibility.

Let’s not give in to hyperbole. The IFA at NYU absolutely dominates in the art history world, with Columbia, Berkeley, and Harvard also doing exceptionally well.

As Descartesz’s lists probably indicate, however, Yale is in the running (along with Princeton, Chicago, Michigan, and recently Penn) for the #5 spot.

That’s not to say it’s universally strong, of course. Ancient art, for example, is fairly weak. At the undergraduate level, however, one could hardly do better.

Thank you everyone! You are all so very helpful.

Yes, please don’t confuse undergrad with grad. Most programs at Yale are very good or Yale would invest in making them better. Getting into Yale is much harder than picking a good course of study.

That said, Yale has lots of stuff. They have two real museums, lots more in the back rooms, lots of access to stuff, etc. That makes the experience better.
