Art History Major/LAC

Need help seeking a small LAC in the east or midwest with strong Art History and 2/3 D Studio Art. Also need good merit scholarship. So far D is interested in Hobart and William Smith (Architecturial Studies major) Thank you.

I know Oberlin has strong art history, and the best art museum of any LAC, hands down. Not sure about studio art.

Tell her to apply to SCAD.

applicantmum, My son was also interested in a combination of art history and studio art and this was his short list: Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Conn College, Skidmore, Kenyon. I would add to this list Oberlin, Vassar and Smith, and among the ivy league, Brown and Yale.

These schools have excellent to good need based aid, but very few offer merit aid. If you really need merit (as opposed to need) then you'd have to eliminate the more selective.

I'd have to take polite exception with quaere's comment about the best art museums: Williams has three world class museums on or near campus and so many museum directors and curators are Williams alums that they're known as the Williams mafia! Definitely one of the best art history departments in the country and very good studio art as well.

My son graduated from Williams earlier this month with a combined degree in art history and studio and will most likely seek a Masters of architecture after he's gained some work experience. While at Williams he held museum positions both on campus and as a summer intern and was able to actively show his own artwork as well.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Love some of the schools listed....However don't believe we qualify for financial aid so looking for schools with merit aid. Momrath-My daughters plan is a LAC followed by Masters in architecture or interior architecture. Not ready to commit to either yet and she has other interests so decided on the LAC first. Can anyone think of schools with strong ART History/ Studio Art as well as Merit aid for many students?

Brandeis University fits your criteria. Although not officially a LAC, it's a very small University (around 300 students) with strong focus on undergraduate education and a LAC environment.

Oberlin offers merit aid.
Its own museum is quite good; it is also fairly near to the Cleveland art museum. The Williams museums, especially the Clark, are among the best in the country. Williams offers need-based aid only.
Columbia and NYU also have excellent art history.

Not sure how I forgot about Williams. They're quite near MassMoCA as well.

Bard has excellent art programs but no museum -- Art History classes require trips to NYC. Small amount of merit aid (you need to be in top 10 students in your grade.)

NYU is famous for poor aid packages, but Art Major is at Stenhardt, not Arts and Sciences. If your D is a very strong student with strong test scores she would be elligible for merit aid there.

UofChicago has a limited amount of merit aid.

Your D would have to be an exceptional candidate to qualify for merit aid at these institutions.

SUNY Purchase has excellent studio art and OOS tuition is still very low.

St. Mary's of Maryland And SUNY Geneseo are state schools w/LAC feel. I don't know about art at either school.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. We will take a look at Oberlin and Brandais. I wasn't aware Oberlin had merit money. Her GPA is strong from a respected college prep school. Her test scores are probably not strong enough for the highly competitive merit money schools. St. Mary's of Maryland looks good on paper but will research their art program.

applicantmum, have you taken a look at the thread at the top of the parents board titled "Schools known for good merit aid"?

Smith is another that I would suggest for merit and strength in the arts.
