We have two generations of art history majors in our family. I studied art history at a large university. I always thought I would go into museum work but got distracted long the way and ended up in a consumer product related business. The skills that are transferable are evaluation, analysis, articulation have served me well. On a personal level I have a lifelong interest in art and constantly use what I learned decades ago when I visit museums and monuments all over the world. To put it another way studying art history has made me a more interesting person.

My son who is a rising senior at Williams is doing a combined major of art history/art studio and will be more likely to go into something more specifically related to the arts. This summer he's doing a museum internship and considers museum work -- either curating or other areas like education or management -- to be of interest in which case he will need a masters or a PhD in art history. There is also a possibility that he will get a masters in architecture. And, in a related but different direction, he is considering law school as there are many arts related law fields.

Thank you for your info. She recently travel to europe and was in awe of the art and architecture. At this point, she's undecided and has always had a love of history and art. But she also feels that she should study something "more practical". I had a liberal arts background and I know that one can study the "arts" and still come out with great skills that apply to various areas of life. She has alot to consider during her search for colleges and hopefully will be happy with whatever she decides.
