Hey so I am studying Art History and wondering what I actually need to know for the test.

Do I need to memorize the name and artist of a bunch of pieces or are just a good grasp of the major concepts from each period enough? I know I need to be able to identify some works for the long essays, but other than those do I need to know the crazy specifics?

Also on the second essay that requires you to cite a work of art outside of the "European tradition" does North America count as within the tradition seeing how it's considered a western society?

Lastly, does the test emphasis any particular topic? Like women's history and AP Euro, or the Progressive Era in AP US?

You do need to memorize the names and artist for some of the more “important” pieces. They ask you questions about the author and the dates, but you can usually narrow it down to one or two good answers.

I think that North American would definitely count as a work outside of European tradition, but have you considered Asian pieces? Theres a lot of stuff there.

Would more “important” pieces be the ones covered in Gardner’s? Or even more? Less? I know it’s impossible to know ALL the pieces on the test but I want to get close!
