I am an art history major and it is a subject I am passionate about. I do not see myself working in the art world but I do think the skills I have gained from studying art history translate well to work in marketing/advertisement, PR, and maybe even the business side of entertainment. I was accepted to UCLA as an art history major and UCR as an art history/administrative studies major. I want to go to UCR to have a business background to reinforce my marketing/advertising skills..but LA could be better for connections and maybe I could do something in the entertainment industry I should just get a better understanding for it. What should I do?

Oops, sorry, answered the wrong post.

Your career will depend on how resourceful you are and the internships/work experience you get. Which school you attend will have a marginal affect on your job prospects if you have a strong resume.

Go to where you think you’ll be most happy at and have the best college experience.

For the opportunities you’re interested in (marketing, advertising, entertainment), UCLA is definitely the better choice. UCLA is located in an entertainment mecca…and some of the best art museums around can be found in LA (including those at UCLA). If you’re passionate about art history, UCLA will definitely foster that passion and offer you career opportunities in that field as well.

Of course, where you go to school is secondary to what you do at school, but in your case, UCLA will open doors. I’m not saying you’re guaranteed to find that dream job at the end…nor am I saying UCR’s program is bad. However, that “administrative studies” footnote tacked onto your degree won’t really do that much for you. Now if you’ve visited UCLA, absolutely hate the environment, then do not come! IMO, this is an important aspect for school selection and one that is often overlooked for prestige and such things. If you are happy at UCR, you will succeed and it’s not a “wrong” choice at all.
