art major and gpa ?

i was thinking of majoring in art but worried about how taking studio classes would affect my gpa. i would really like to be my gpa around a 3.5. but is that even possible as an art major because art is very subjective and I feel like most teachers would just hand out B's unless the student is really outstanding..and i'm just average. what do you guys think?

i think it's subjective. people do it... it's just tough. if you're talented and work really hard you shouldn't have a problem keeping a 3.5 though. it also depends on which classes your in.. like some people outside of an art major will be in some of your classes and those are like cake classes since the teacher usually knows that... you're going to probably produce the best work... but in advanced studio classes teachers can be more picky. some teachers just don't give 4.0 no matter what you do.

Aesthetics are subjective and culturally dependent. I found some faculty may or may not use aesthetic values in grading. The ones that were obstinate - I often did my thing anyway - and was pleased even if I got a lower grade. I still remember the TA at RIT that ripped into my contact sheets in a Photo I class. The criticism confused me, but when I looked back at them at the end of the year I realized she was simply ignorant.

If you can justify form as a product of function, or style as a byproduct of some exploration of aesthetic value, then you may receive recognition even if it goes against the grain of an open-minded profs. values. There is also craft, and technical knowledge which can be evaluated with less subjectivity.

Rarely is something innovative received warmly. But a good prof should listen and work with you to understand your process, and if it is sound, the merit and appreciation will lie within your ability to articulate the basis and subsequent development of the result.
