What are the best colleges for my student to major in Studio Art (painting or illustration) and minor in psychology?

My youngest daughter is interested in art therapy, with more of an emphasis on psychology and counseling but still with the studio arts background. I believe SVA and Pratt have such a program (but it wouldn’t include the psychology minor) and there are some LACs with such programs where you can do more psychology. Try this link, though I don’t know if this is what you were really after:

VCU, I believe, had the option of doing an art therapy minor within the art education major. Check with MICA too because I remember someone asking about this when we were visiting. Certainly, many of the large universities with art programs will allow you to do a mix of psych (hopefully not psycho) and art.

Ha, ha. A psycho minor might be suspect! Thanks for your replies. I guess what we really need to know is what LAC or universities have very good art departments, especially in painting. Almost all colleges offer psychology, but it seems to be rare to find a great art department and not one that is only mediocre. We need suggestions!

Syracuse has a decent art program, not sure of painting specifically. I’d imagine that they have psych. SAIC is an art school, but that was on the list… still not sure if you’re interested specifically in art therapy or not. Drexel might be a possibility, VCU, Columbia, UCLA. A good place to look is the list of colleges that participate in National Portfolio Review Day http://www.portfolioday.net/content/view/23/37/ There are universities listed there that would most likely have psychology programs… and they care enough about art to send reps to NPDA… so I guess that’s something to start with.

My oldest D’s best friend (also art kid) ended up going to Salve Regina for art.
