art portfolio/music tapes

does MIT accept these things for application? if yes have any of you done it? thanks

Long story short: If you have some exceptional work, or it's something that you're very passioante about, then go for it; but don't send a tape just to do it

My son has a deviantArt account where he posts some of his photographic artwork. He included one print with his application and wrote an associated essay, then included the URL for his dA account.

It wasn't really an art portfolio, but I sent in computer-aided design (CAD) files of some stuff I designed for side projects, and wrote an essay on my progression in engineering and such. You can send in anything as long as you don't get ridiculous about it.

mootmom: just curious, what's your son's dA url? I'm a dA member too. :D

MIT will, incidentally, look at anything you send them. But I wouldn't advise abusing the privilege.

We have a new system this year - you send art and/or music portfolios directly to the faculty and they report back to us. Check the application for details.

-B

can/should I still submit them if I'm not majoring in them? My private art teacher told me that he's had many of his students who are not majoring in art submit portfolios when they apply for colleges.

The overwhelming majority of people who submit art/music are not majoring in those fields.

True dat ^

I sent in my art portfolio. Not exactly sure whether it helped me since I am not an accomplished artist whatsoever. I did it just to show the "non-science" side of my varied interests.

i sent a photography portfolio.

I still remember that portfolio pebbles. :-)

oh yeah... you had to get stitches, didn't you...

hope the recovery went well!

;-)

does MIT have certain requirement about these things? like how many slides in portfolio, etc?

The music department asks for two samples; the art/architecture department doesn't specify.

Here's the complete text from the application:
