Art Programs - not so great grades

Hi, My daughter, a senior this year, is looking into colleges. She would like a strong art program, especially sculpture. Her grades are have only been mediocre as were her SAT scores. I'd like her to look into a public university because they'll have lots of options in case she gets bored with art for art's sake. Does anybody have any suggestions for a likely match for her? She's really depressed and feels like no schools are going to want her, but I'm sure that can't be the case.

Thanks!

How mediocre are the GPA and SAT? Also, what APs? Any alum status? ECs, etc?

Take a look at "Rugg's Reccomendations on the Colleges"

For studio art (assuming 1650 to 1800 of 2400), there's a ton of options, just as there are for SATs below 1600 of 2400.

Ruggs...

If she is interested in majoring in Art or Design and can produce a strong portfolio, she needn't worry that no schools are going to want her. Many of the schools I visited with my daughter this past summer were quite clear that their academic expectations for applicants in the fine and performing arts are not as high as for in other majors.

I think the SAT was just over 1400. She is currently in IB Art. One of her portfolio problems is that as a 3-dimensional artist, her pieces take much longer to produce than a 2 dimensional artist. At least, that is what she tells me. I tell her maybe she needs to expand to become comfortable with 2 D art as well, so she can compete with the other candidates. I think her GPA is hovering just above 3.0.

I'll look at the Rugg's book...thanks for the advice.

Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond has a GREAT art department with a special emphasis on sculpture. The university itself is not particularly selective, but the art faculty are among the best in the country.

Thanks Momrath...that does look like a possible fit. I'm forwarding it to my daughter.

Look at SUNY Purchase
