Art school after finishing BA

Hi, I just signed up for this college confidential and do really know how to use it....
but I have several questions about art school.
I am a college student finishing up my BA in philosophy this semester.(thats right philosophy....).
I am studying in Massachusetts but I am an international student.
But I cannot give up my dream and I am thinking about transferring to RISD after the graduation. (I mean, it doesnt have to be RISD but I like RISD atomosphere the most.)
I am kinda good at drawing (not great) and good at making detailed 3D objects like miniature buildings (I can compete with other applicants for this). And my gpa is 3.6 with honors but my grades have nothing to do with art....(I took just one art class in college)

At this point i have no clue how hard it would be to get into a good art school like RISD or Parsons since it is very very famous for its excellence in that field. (I expect every applicant to be good and many of them to be better at drawing than i am.... and the admission will be very very competitive....) And i am a transfer student which, i assume, reduces the possibility.
So if you know anything about admission please tell me how hard it is (it would be very helpful to have the data of how many transfer students apply and how many of them the school usually accepts, etc.)

I would really appreciate if you could ansewer some of those questions.

Thank you.

lifeis,
Welcome to CC! I’ve moved your thread to the Visual arts major as you will likely get better input here. I am also modifying your thread title because since you’re finishing your BA, you will not be considered a transfer student (that designation is only for students changing schools during their undergraduate program). Instead you will apply for a second UG degree or graduate school, such as an MFA.

oh thanks but Im thinking about transferring as a sophomore in undergrad (just because I have no art related background and wont probably get accepted in the grad program…) So Im going for BFA (that means I’ll have BA in phil and BFA in design or something)
thank you though

You need to check with RISD or any other school about your plans. You can’t, generally, transfer all of your credits from a liberal arts college or university program and pick up the same major (like philosophy) at an art school like RISD. If you are a senior this year, you can’t just transfer as a sophmore to RISD and take all your credits with you. I think you are unfamiliar with what is meant by transfer. This is generally for students finishing one or, sometimes, two years at a 4 year undergraduate program and transferring to another four year program. Sometimes, people refer to community college grads with a AA degree (2 year) that then complete a 4 year program as “transfers”. However, if you get to your 3 or 4th year of an undergraduate education and find that you have mistaken your calling and you now know you want a BFA, then you really have to start from scratch. You can transfer some of your credits toward a BFA but this may work for a small number of liberal arts credits unless you did a lot of art history in your undergrad. However, you probably will have to apply as a new student and ask them to accept some of your undergraduate credits toward your BFA (but it will be very few).

Please note that some schools are better about transfer credits then others. For example, Ringling School of Art will waive all gen eds for students who have completed a prior bachelors degree. Some schools , like Calarts, have a very rigid cluster of courses that basically will require about four years of study even with a prior bachelors degree. You really need to look into this.

Most schools will want a portfolio as a transfer student. You should also check into this.
