Starting in August I will be a senior and I really need help finding some good art schools or schools with good art programs. I have SCAD, MICA, and Pratt Institute on my list. I visited SCAD two weeks ago and I am impressed with them. I'm thinking about majoring in graphic design and minoring in illustration or vice versa. I would like to see some schools that are not extremely far away ( I live in South Carolina). Pricing is also a major issue. Please help!

Don’t let price stop you from applying to various schools. Many offer scholarships, etc that offset the cost but you won’t know until you get accepted to a school.

You seem to be looking kind of far. There are universities in DC, Philly and Florida, Also, there is well regarded program in Virginia - I think its VCU but I forget exactly. Just google them.

Also, look up National Portfolio Day and visit one nearest to you with your portfolio.

Put Ringling on your list.
Research programs at state universities–the price will be better.

@Madabouttx is right about scholarships. DS applied to 6 different schools and was offered significant merit money from 4 of them. I would look at Ringling (FL) and VCU (VA). Philly is a bit farther for you but U of Arts & Tyler are both there. There should be a National Portfolio Day near you this fall. Definitely worth the time.

For independent colleges of art and design, see this website: http://www.aicad.org/choosing-a-school/.

I would take SCAD off your list. The graphic design faculty lost three very strong professors plus a few others in the past couple of years.

VCU and Parsons should definitely be on your list.
